why is the iray viewport not showing the same as the render output?

I must be misunderstanding something.
On the left is an emissive shader applied to a plane and it looks as expected in the render ouput
One the right is my viewport, set to Iray mode - but the light isn't being shown.
Tried playing with various render and shader settings, to no avail. I'm pretty sure I just miss some odd setting somewhere.

The Viewport preview is controlled by the Draw Settings pane, not Render Settings. make sure, most importantly, that it is set to Photoreal mode - emissives don't show in Interactive.
Thanks for your reply Richard... I'm running v4.12, and "Photoreal" is only abvailable in Render Mode settings, which you say don't apply.
The picture in my post above is showing Draw Style "Nvidia Iray" (you might be able to tell by the icon on the top right). But maybe I am misunderstanding your instruction?
After some googling, I found this post and got me digging more carefully - I did not realize that the Editor tab in the Draw Settings pane changes as you change draw style. In the Draw menu panel, ther elusive Draw Mode pulldown is visble.
Phew!
