Rigged geograft always resetting to default pose

I'm trying to set up a rigged geograft (specifically an arachne, or spider-taur if you will).

I thought I was getting things in some sort of order, but if I try to rotate G8F's pelvis, the geograft responds... until I let go of the controls, at which the entire graft jumps back to its default position, distorting the model badly.

Currently, the pelvis is the only weighted group on the geograft, (and there are no JCMs or smoothing modifiers), although I'm quite a long way through setting up the rest of the armature, so I'd really rather not start over.

Why is this happening?

What happens if in Draw Setting you change the Manipulation Binding setting? Does it still move until you release the mouse, or is it entirely stuck?

In that case, it's entirely stuck.

(For the record, I eventually chose to start over on the set-up as it gave me an excuse to make another alteration, but I would still like to know what I did wrong so I can fix the problem if I have it again).

OK, I think it was the options in the Binding tab of Tool Settings when the Node Weight map Brush tool is active that need adjusting - if it happens again post what you have, or compare them with a figure that works.
