upgading from Gen2 to Gen8?

AaronHAaronH Posts: 79

I've been slowly working my way back into working with Daz because we'll i've missed it.  Thanks life.  Now i'm seeing all the new character models and wondering if i should keep working with Gen2 or start the slow transition over to Gen8?  I've seen the gen2 to gen8 converter from riversoft and i'm contemplating that, but i'm not finding one for the male side as well.

I'm sorry if this is asked and i'm blind in my search, and Thank you in advance for the help.

Well that's annoying! I'll try another way: G2M to G8M Character Convertor

    Looks like that got it!

Depends. Stephanie 8, Victoria 8, and Olympia 8, look nothing like their G2F counterparts. If you invest in the character converters, there's no need to buy the G8F ladies unless you like their look too.

Hi! I am soooo glad to have chanced upon this thread while searching...

I first started on DAZ in 2006 and returned in 2013. I admit to never having successfully learned the software all these years and work (and reality!) has kept me away until recently. My creative fire has just been rekindled and there are now lots of helpful YouTube videos to guide me!).

Since 2006, I must have spent over $3000 on characters (G1, G2, G3, Michael3-5-6, Victoria5, etc), products (lighting systems, hair, beard and anatomy mods, etc), clothes, accessories...

I have the same question. Do my past purchases work on G8 characters? Or would I have to repurchase EVERYTHING from scratch (which I most certainly would not spend on again). Would the above two suggested converters enable me to utilise past purchases on G8? If not, I may just content myself with using older Genesis models.

THANKS SO MUCH for your help and advice!

Off the top of my head, the only things that will work without buying utilities are the clothes and hair because of Auto-Fit. (Even then, things like shoes won't work too well and longer hairs will lose their bones unless you parent them.)

Lighting systems will work if you use them in the correct render engine. (Using your 3Delight lights in 3Delight will work.) If you render in 3Delight, please make sure the textures in the scene are all for 3Delight because DS might crash if there's an Iray material preset in the scene. (3Delight textures in an Iray scene won't affect anything.)

Anatomy mods, if they're geografts, will not work. HD morphs will not transfer between generations. SD morphs will transfer using GenX and then one of the G3 to G8 converters, but it's a lot of work. (Some morphs won't transfer over for whatever reason. These convertions aren't exactly perfect at times.) The UVs have changed drastically between Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 & 8. In order to use older textures on G8 or use newer textures on older figures, you would need to invest in Cayman Studios' geografts. The good news is that most G8 characters use the base UV which is basically the same between G3 and G8. However, some materials may be tricky to apply since eyelashes are a separate geometry in G8 and those often require "hierarchical presets", which automatically apply textures to figures and anatomical parts, like eyelashes and genitals. The work around is re-saving these as "material presets".

It is easier to stick to the old items. But G8 has better bends and expressions. You can always experiment with the free G8 bases available in your product library, "Genesis 8 Starter Essentials".

THANK YOU Molly for the amazingly detailed response. Despite all these years as a DAZ owner (how time flies!!), I am still a complete newbie but am now picking up skills consistently thanks to Youtube videos which didn't exist 15 years ago.

I didn't understand a lot of the tech lingo but my main takeaway is that, for my personal needs and limited knowledge of DAZ, it's probably simpler and economically-sensible to stick to the old items if I do not wish to fork out another few thousand dollars to purchase new stuff. I am not hesitant to spend some money on G8 but find it a total waste to throw away all my old items and wardrobe. Also, I just loaded the basic G8 and none of my old items showed up in Smart Content after I clicked on "Filter by Context" which I take to mean that none of my old items will fit G8. Rather sad morning but I guess I should rekindle my old flame with G2 and G3 :)

You're such a magical artist and invaluable DAZ resource! <3

Unfortunately, Smart Content won't show items from earlier generations which can be autofit to g8, so that doesn't necessarily mean they won't work.  But there's no reason not to use the previous figures.

That's a very BIG tip, Mike! Looks like I will be spending the next couple of days toying around and attempting to clothe my new G8 with clothes from the dusty, old G2/3 wardrobe :P

I just truly want to understand what old purchases will work on G8 so that I can better invest on new items. Ultimately, I also have to figure out if it's worth the money/effort to move to G8. I cannot imagine that many people repurchase all their stuff as soon as a new Genesis character is released.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I don't use Smart Content. I pick assets straight from the Content Library (or whatever it's called). I click on the clothes and follow the Auto-Fit dialogue, if the clothes are from a previous Genesis figure. I've had a lot of success with several G2F outfits on G8F, except for shoes and long skirts, for example.

    Thank you Molly!

So G8 and some other stuff I had my eyes on went on sale (>70% off) yesterday and today so I bit and spent about $500 also utilizing the 4 PC+ coupons for April. Diving straight into YouTube videos now to learn the ropes and hope to share some of my first renders soon to learn from the critiques! Thanks so much for the information and warm welcome!
