Add tools to a pane?

I'm already using a custom workspace, but one feature I like from Hollywood Boulevard is the top bar with context-sensitive tool buttons.  E.g., if you choose the lights pane, you get "create a new spotlight" and "create a light preset."  But I can't figure out how to put these tools into my custom workspace, or how to create a toolbar like the strip used in Hollywood Boulevard.  It's not a big deal for most tools, as I can find them in the Create menu anyway, but to create a light preset I actually had to reload Hollywood Boulevard just to use that one tool.  (I'm sure there's a better way to find it!)  Ideally I'd like a "tools" pane where I can click on handy tool buttons.

So it's not a big deal, but I'm curious if anyone has wisdom on how to add tools to the UI.  Thanks!

I'm not changing my layout to see if this works in all of them ... but in the advanced layout I am using, if one right-clicks on an empty space on the tool bar area, you can select what you want to see there.

Or if it is the real Light Pane that you want, or any other, they are found listed under Windows {between Connect and Scripts}.

Okay, it's not so hard. Open the Customize dialog (Window -> Workspace -> Customize, or simply F3). The dialog is split in two, Actions on the left, Activities/Menus/Toolbars on the right. Every possible action is listed somewhere on the left. The stuff on the right changes with every layout. The Menus section lists the contents of all the menus used in the layout, wherever they might be, not just at the top of the main window. The Toolbars section shows, as you might guess, all the tools shown scattered around the edges of the main window.

To add an action to a toolbar, find it in the Actions section (Hint: "Save Filters" for your light preset) and drag it to the toolbar to which you want to add it, maybe Create or Input Output. You can move the item up and down in the toolbar if it doesn't look right.

To make a new toolbar, right-click on any one of them, and Add Toolbar... to insert a new one after the current one (you can move it later). Name it as you want, and add some actions. Click on Apply at the bottom, then go to Activities and enable your new toolbar with another right click. Accept, and you're done. Have fun!

Thanks for both of those helpful replies.  I was able to make a custom toolbar easily, which is great.  But honestly, I'd rather add my icons to existing space on an existing pane rather than expend precious real estate on a toolbar.  I know I can customize a pane's options menu to do this.

But I'd really like to add action icons directly onto the pane, especially the big empty spaces at the bottom of a pane like the scene pane.  That pane currently just has tips and links to videos, and I've quickly realized I don't need that stuff.  I'd rather replace it with, say, a 'create new spotlight' butotn and a 'create light preset' button, for example.  Is there any way to do this?  I can post a screenshot if that would help clarify what I want to do.  Thanks!

I understand exactly what you mean, but I'm pretty sure you can't change the contents of the tabs, that's all in the code. If toolbars could be docked like the tab panes, that might be handy, but they will only attach around the edges. A custom menu won't take up much space, but toolbar space is already there, so why not just use it, it can't be used for anything else.

Thanks for your reply.  Yep, I'l just use toolbar space.  Thanks again.
