Iray or 3delight to start?
hi there
I'm still a newbie, since I installed Daz Studio less then two months ago; now that I'm starting to understand the very basic stuff I would like to ask if you agree - as I'm conviced after following the forum for a while and browsing different threads - that I should definitively focus on Iray and don't think at all about 3delight..
Also, do you think 3delight will still be available in the next future?
thank you!

3delight is still useful, and will remain available in DS. I personally like it much better than Iray, but that's a matter of taste.
However a lot of people find Iray easier to work with to get realistic results, and quite a lot of PAs don't supply 3DL materials with their new content (there are converters, but that means more work), so Iray will probably be easier for you to start with.
It's certainly true that, if you are mostly using relatively recent content, there are going to be far more products with Iray materials and no 3Delight than vice versa. Hwever, people certainly do still use 3Delight and there are scripts that will at least try to convert Iray materials t something that looks similar in 3Delight.
thanks to both of you..
to be honest I find 3delight easy to understand when it comes to lights, if you did photos I think it's more logic; with Iray I'm able to have better results in general but I somehow feel like not really having the control, many things are happening withouth me wanting or aiming for that. But I guess it's normal for a newbie so I would focus on Itay.
But I guess I still need to go on with 3delight, too..
again, thanks for your help!
As someone with no experience in any kind of real world lighting (photography, cinematography, stage lighting) I find that I have better control in 3Delight.
yea, my impression, too, but I still prefer Iray and I hope that with time and experience it'll be better..
Iray is a renderer that simulates real-world conditions, so it much more akin to photography , 3Delight is much "simpler" in its rendering model (simpler here not meaning worse or better) and so its properties are easier to understand. If you choose 3Delight, make sure you know how to convert materials, since all recent products are for Iray.
So if you want to understand Iray, a good idea is to read up on photography and how light behaves. Many photography tutorials carry over to Iray. Flashlight, Sunlight, Flags, Bounces, Material effects, all things you can use in Iray.
Yes, Iray is a physically based render engine, so closer to "real world" lighting and photography.
3DL is a biased render engine, so it works rather differently, though it can definitely render photorealistic images if you want it to. But that also means that you can "cheat" by using elements not physically posible, like for example lights which don't cast shadows or which don't cause specular highlights.
