I've only really used 3Delight for rendering, but Iray looks good. However my attempts with Iray take forever compared to 3Delight. What settings in Iray do people recommend I change/turn off if speed is a factor?
The first big difference between those is that Iray runs on your GPU (only on Nvidia GPUs) and 3Delight runs on your cpu, that said we need to know what are your system specs so we can help you more.
Theres a lot of factors that come into play on the speed of Iray renders.
What kind of specs? Here are some from troubleshooting on DS itself: Not sure if these are the kind you mean.
you have an integrated video card, it's into the CPU, or at least this is what Daz Studio is using by default.. Iray is an nVidia technology, so a GTX card is somehow a minimum requirement if you want to render with Iray with better speed (but I also tested with a GT one too and it still works)
basically the problem is that using a non nVidia card (so also AMD) VRAM and Cuda cores are not used, so you will render with an higher technology using still and only (just like with 3delight) the same CPU; longer rendering as expected.
but I'm still a newbie, so this is what I learned by reading the forum and watching tutorials; there's still a chance my english is so bad that I didn't get a single concept right!
And...I've found that Daz 4.10 recognizes my GPU while 4.12 does not.
What GPU do you have? Newer versions of Iray may drop some old architectures or require new drivers. I have a Geforce 525M, which works in DS4.10 but not in 4.11 or 4.12
As brvsn said, that does not tell much besides that daz is using a integrated GPU on a intel CPU, if you are on windows 10 going on start menu> settings> about should tell you what CPU do you have and how much RAM.
that troubleshoot you posted is only about OpenGL, thas the render engine for the viewport.
The catch is you "can" render Iray on CPU but its going to take ages, no way around that... and without a Nvidia GPU (or if you GPU runs out of video memory) the render will always fall back to the CPU.
see if you can find what CPU do you have, what GPU if any and how much memory. or if you have a OC you got pre-build or a laptop the model and who made it.
Some of us only discovered Daz whilst bored at home during this lockdown period so are making do with what we got...
i do my iray renders on my aging laptop with a :
intel core i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60 GHz
8.00GB RAM
Generic intel graphics (so all renders are CPU)
This forces me to keep things simple... Daz has a steep learning curve and if i had the power to do more maybe i would have been overwelmed!
i managed to pick up 'scene optimizer' on sale yesterday for around $9 so will be playing around with that to help with render times.
i also keep the pixel dimensions to 1080 max along the widest axis.
A fanastic tool for those of us with substandard systems is topaz gigapixel AI... it does a fantastic job of enlarging any image and you can try it free for a month!
If and when i return to work and if Daz still interests me i will be looking to upgrade to a system built around a Nvidia GTX 2070 GPU and hope to get a lot of help from the comunity on how o go about that.
Until then i'll continue to learn to make do with what i got... if nothing else its been a great distraction during these testing times!
Looking at my Windows 10 settings it says : processor intel(R) Core (TM) i5-4210U CPU @ 1.70GHz 2.40 GHz
Installed RAM *.00GB (7.89 usable)
System type: 64 bit operating system, x64-based processor.
As for GPU I have no idea. Should i try rendering with GPU instead of CPU? How would I try that?
I don't think windows settings shows GPU, if you really have one available to render with; as I said in my previous post Iray is for nVidia GPU only.
For a definitive report you could click the windows start button and start writing System information: it's a windows tool so you should have it; then go to Components / Display (don't know exactly how they're labeled in english) and see if you have an external nVidia GPU.
So @SteveM17 My guess is that you have a laptop judging by you cpu, if thats the case, then you probably dont have a dedicated GPU thats able to render Iray, and no easy way to have one working on that PC.
At this point unless you are willing to get a full upgrade to a desktop, I'd stick with 3Delight. If you decide to get a upgrade lets us know and we can try to help you choose the best setup for your budget.
I remember way back when I was trying to run DAZ on a athlon with a 9500GT and 4 Gbs of ram... even before Iray it was painfull... lol

You're right, it is indeed a laptop. It was pretty powerful at first - or so it seemed - but that was a few years ago and it's probably getting old and tired now. I'll stick with 3Delight for now, and just mess with Iray for an occasianal experiment. Thanks for your advice , people.

"What GPU do you have?"
I have 680 and 980 EVGA cards in Mac Pro Towers. Can't get 4.12 to recognize them so I have to render in 4.10.

For those of us that do CPU rendering, scripted 3Delight with aweSurface is a serious option. Roughly 3-5 times faster than IRay.
