why doesn't Mimic pro work with Genesis figures

edited December 1969 in Daz Studio Discussion

just wanted to know why Mimic pro doesn't seem to work with Genesis figures

the built in lipsync (which is relatively useless) works with Genesis , but not Mimic Pro

has anyone been successful with Mimic Pro and Genesis .. .

if you have , please tell me how this is done.

or at least can i get some confirmation that it does not work for you either.

Mac Pro , Windows 8.1 , DazStudio 4.6.2.1.2.0

Mimic Pro requires a .cr2 file. Genesis and Genesis 2 are in .duf format. Mimic Pro hasn't been updated to read .duf files. That is why Genesis and Genesis 2 won't work in Mimic Pro.

You could try using DAZ Studio's .cr2 exporter to export Genesis or Genesis 2 as a .cr2 file. You could then load that .cr2 into Mimic Pro and use the existing Genesis or Genesis 2 dmc (depending on your the figure you are using). You could then save out the animation and apply it to Genesis or Genesis 2 in DAZ Studio.

I'm not sure whether or not this will work as I haven't tried it myself.

    thanx for the advice jared
but another noob question , how do you export as a cr2 file....
i'm not home right so i can't open up Daz and try it ....
but i think i could do the rest of what you said , but i wouldn't know how to actually export a .cr2
is that a drop-down menu option , or maybe a utilities thing ?

It's an export option. Select Genesis and then go to File > Export and then Choose .cr2 as the type of export in the export dialog, name the figure (probably just give it the same name as the original figure) and choose a location to export it.

    alrighty ...
i'll give that a test drive when i get home .

    thanx again

a Poser DSON import in PP12 using D3D importer saved as a cr2 works for me in mimic pro.

i don't have Poser , i thought Daz plus Poser would be relatively redundant ...
so i just bought iClone to compliment Daz .... i'm hoping it's a better combo.

if you are animating in iClone you do not need mimic, iClone facial animation is excellent. (limited to iclone though)

that's why i'm trying to get genesis to work with Mimic Pro ...
so that i can compare which of these 2 apps handles lip-syncing and facial animation better.
it is extremely tedious work to get good quality results .... and i want to know which one is better....
or if they are equally powerful ...which one is the easier.

well put it this way, I can create mimic dmc files for most things in mimic pro, and those I cannot notepad actually works but is hard work!
    But
I rarely use Daz studio at all except as an exporter and Daz content set up tool for iClone, carrara and Poser if doing animation
will do occasional image render in it.
If by chance I do render an animation I mostly just use the inbuilt lipsync and a few facial morphs.

Wendy , you are saying exactly what i had in mind .... i like Daz Characters a lot ..
they are the best you can get in my opinion....
but i don't really care for the app that much.
so if you are saying to just get my Daz figures over to iClone and do my animations over there
then that is exactly what i was hoping to find out .. great news...
and thank you very much for already having experience in both apps and sharing your opinion with me.
you have just saved me from wasting a lot of time just to find out which one is better to animate in.

    cheers

Daz studio does beautiful art renders
it uses Renderman/Pixar technology in its 3Ddelight engine
    but
for me it is far to slow for animation
some with powerfull renderfarms may disagree and I admit the results would be stunning but for me personally to render animation I look to other apps, iClone for speed and Carrara for more detailed highend stuff.

i have never rendered anything before.... i guess i'll just have to see if iClone renderer looks
good enough for what i'm doing ... then go from there.

i just want to get the easiest facial animation and lip-sync workflow going .
i haven't even set my first key frame yet ... LOL
watching some tutorials , asking questions , learning some terms , etc.

That's interesting. When you bring a DS character into iClone, does it look the same as it did in DS, or does it take on that "CrazyTalk" look?

CrazyTalk has a nice lipsync tool, easy to use and it works well. iClone looks like it is the same tool. The main reservation I've had about investing in it, though, is that the iClone characters I've seen in screenshots are much less sophisticated than DS or Poser characters. Has that changed now that iClone can import Genesis characters?

Genesis facially has all the morphs in iClone it has in studio and IMO the animation is better.
body morphs are locked only bone based stuff works so no glute control or JCMs strictly weightpainting.
Genesis2 is harder to bring over as no presets available so you must manually set it up in 3Dxchange but works too.
most my latter videos in my sigline link use iclone with Daz figures if you want to look.

I had a look at your videos. The pig import was the most useful 3DX tutorial I've seen. I'm surprised and disappointed 3DX doesn't have a Genesis 2 import filter. These people have a marketing budget like there's no tomorrow, and their models cost extreme amounts of money, yet they skimp on dev efforts? There is no place in my heart for marketing.

In spite of your handle, I did not expect to see a cat box used as an instructional device, not once but multiple times. I agree, cats make good models.

I agree, the Reallusion UI is more accessible than DS, Poser or Carrara. It leaves more time for creating, and less for figuring out the program. It makes sense that would be true, as Reallusion was never rooted in the still image world the way the others were, and largely still are. Animation was built in from the beginning. That is Reallusion's appeal to me.

    Thanks.
