Scene or Scene Subset should do that.

How do you make an instance of something in DS?

Select the object you want to create instances of, then from the menu, select Create > "New Node Instance" (or "New Node Instances").

Note that the position won't be as expected if the selected object is parented to something, so if it is, unparent it, create the instance(s) of it, then reparent it.

    Makes perfect sense ;)
    Wow... thanks for this!

Wow... thanks for this! There is also an Icon for them in the Tools on your interface if you are using one of the more advanced interfaces, or you can create a custom interface and include them.

Attached is screenshot for Create Node Instance, Create Node Instances and Create Geometry Shell cut from my typical custom Interface. (Based on, but heavily modified from City Limits with Darkside style)

Wow.... I like that. Um... create geometry shell? Neat. I need to find more reading materials on this tool, for sure.

Think of a Geometry Shell as just the mesh, which can be slightly larger than the base figure and follow the base figure. With a the same or a different UV set and texture than the figure it was created from. (Some of the typical uses, can be facial and/or body hair, Tatoos, Wounds and scars, painted on clothing with some depth, etc. Also can be used as an instance that will move with the base instance, but with a different texture. :)

A geometry shell can even be unparented from the base figure and used just like an instance, but with different materials - that allows for a greater variety of appearances and can disguise the fact that the items are duplicates, but of course the textures typically add a fair bit of load to the system.
