I only have Win XP Pro SP3 32 bit.

Can DS 4.6 Pro be installed with this OS? Thanks.

You will need to download and install the 32 bit version of DAZ Studio of course, but yes, it should run OK

How much RAM do you have available? Win XP can only see 3 GB RAM maximum, so using the 32 bit version would limit the number of figures that you can load into a Scene at the same time.

Thanks for the quick reply, Jimmy.
Relieved to hear that I can run DS 4.6 on the XP

My system was installed with 4GB ram.
Not a heavy user atm, so I guess it should be ok.

If I were to upgrade PC in future, what amount of ram is comfortable for DS4.6?

    The more the merrier :P.

Seriously, if you can afford that, more RAM is good for you. I always used DS 4.5 Pro - now I'm taking a sabbatical from it so it's uninstalled, after some time I'll upgrade to 4.6 - but I know the diffference between 4GB of RAM (if I recall correctly, my Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 I had it on serves as a backup now) and 16GB of RAM from Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 with the following stats: Intel(R) CoreTM i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz with 16GB of RAM, it's a 64-bit version with x64 processor. And it's shipped with 1TB of storage space, which means a lot in terms of content ;). My previous laptop as I told you was Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 and it worked very well with DS, although I can see a huge improvement in the current one. Now rendering takes a few minutes, even if I use UberEnvironment lights (with the highest quality settings, mind you), my own textures and render like 2000x2000.

It depends on the other uses for the computer. I don't think you will ONLY use DS - so think about other features.

For some it is definitely a good idea to upgrade to faster better gear, and get more RAM along the way. I got an ASUS laptop 3-4 years ago, 2nd generation i7 chip and 8 GB anRAM and have since added another 8 so now a total of 16 GB and I love it. RAM is what it's all about.

Don't add more to the XP system though, 32-bit OSes in generalcan only address up 4 GB in theory, 3.2-3.4 GB in reality when it comes to XP

So if you go to 8 GB or 16 or why nore even more, you'll want to consider this if you also are very tight on budget:

    - don't go for the fastest chip, go for somechip that is relatively new, say 1 year old. Make sure the motherboard supports faster versions too. In another 1-2 years, the last of the series of that chip will have been obsoleted and you'll pick the processor of your dreams up for $25 at FRY's. That's a great upgrade to do yourself.

Hard drive.... not just a lot of it, but also fast version.... consider an SSD drive in addition to 10,000 rpm drive, and then a super large 3-5 TB slow drive. Slow drives don't age so fast, they don't overheat so much. Perfect for backup. Fast drives are perfect for video and long animated renders. Don't want that part to be the bottleneck that makes your quick 5 minutes render turn into 20 minutes.

Most importantly: Have fun! If it feels like a pinch, say ouch and walk away from it. Nobody is asking you to help turn the economy around, because the economy doesn't give a rats ass about you, it ain't paying your healthcare or for food on the table. Only you control what you take in and ahve available as discretionary extras to spend.

It is also another question: do you plan to revamp your computer or buy a new one? Sometimes the latter may be a better bang for the buck. But my suggestion is to discuss that in a different thread.

I see you got a good response.

Upgrading to 64 bit is the best thing you could do for the future. I did that a few years ago, and started with 8 GB RAM, but soon upgraded to 16 GB. My PC is still working well, and I don't really have any memory problems (so far). If I upgrade in the future, I will probably go for 32 GB RAM, and a few more cores (I have 4 at present, 8 threads for rendering)

As Cecilia says, the more RAM the merrier, and I would add the more cores the better too :)

I can concur with what has been said already given I have just come from Vista 32bit with 2 GB Ram to Win 7 64 bit with 8 GB Ram....a huge difference.

Yes, it's another thing to consider: 64x system may be a better choice for rendering. Of course they require some basic knowledge, but since you fiddle with 3D, you certainly know the ropes of computers.

Oh yeah 3D and a lack of computer knowledge doesn't help I wish many newcomers would realise this.
