What are some good tips for learning how to pose?

I know it takes time and all that, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on learning how to improve posing skills.  I've considered getting an artist's posing dummy to see if that might help.

What other tips do you have?

Make use of reference photos - be sure of what is, or is not, physically possible.

If possible, try the pose yourself looking in a mirror, to give you a feel for whether it's balanced or not.  Sometimes it helps to work upwards from the feet.

Reference photos are a huge help - especially getting the balance.  Posing aids like Pose Architect really help with that.

Number one... practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice...

Personally I use a commercial pose product to get close to what I want, then make changes myself until I'm happy with how it looks. Yes practice is always an excellent idea, but no need to re-invent the wheel.
