why aren't my deleted polygons staying deleted? {Accomplished, but not resolved}

I'm using the geometry editing tool and deleting specific sections of my forest. I save, reopen the file, and only some stay deleted. Why?

Are you sure that this geometry wasn't just hidden and not deleted?
If I remember right it is a 2-step approach. First you hide the polygons, and then you delete the hidden polygons.
Because they've not been deleted; as felis says, it's a two-step process. Computers are sadly notorious for not doing what we want or what we think we've done, only exactly what they've been told.
I'm not being flippant, merely pointing out that if something is happening that we don't expect; investigate the process we used.
nm no longer trying to help you on anything
Probably because you deleted some but only hid the others.
That isn't necessary now - you can select and then delete selected in recent versions of DS.
That's what I've been doing ... select and delete, then saving the file under a new name. It's only working part way. I spent all day yesterday re-doing what I did the day before.
Do you have only the one edited version of the forest in the scene?
I have one forest winter and one forest superior. Since it seems like roughly half of what I delete stays deleted, I'm twiddling it down with each new save as new name and re-opening.
Final update and result ... Although I never figured out why only segments of my deleted polygons stayed deleted upon reopening of the file, I just kept removing what remained until it finally went to nothing. Here is the final result ...
