Puppeteer - Frustrating

I am trying to use puppereer to create animation of my genesis 8 character. The tutorial for this starts out showing a left side blank grid. He says that if you don't have this grid, go to windows/ panes and "find it." He does not say what to look for. I did that, and clicked on every opption under panes, and could not find this grid.

As a newbie, I am really struggling to get just something basic to work. I need a presenter to come from the background, walk forward, then deliver a two minute discussion. I have now spent 4 days just getting to the point of having the genersis 8 male standing, with an outfit on [ and the 1970s hair do (ugh, nothing else shows)]. I can sort of manipulate the character, but not easily, and I can get him to pose. This represents 4 days of tgrial and error [mostly error] effort.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially getting puppeteer to work.
