Is there a better way to scale objects?

So the current way I know to scale objects is to press the scale button and then use the little squares to scale. If I want to scale the whole object evenly, I have to click on the center square. The issue is that it doesn't highlight yellow unless my cursos is in the exact correct position. If I move it a tiny bit past that position then something else gets highlighted. This is insanely frustrating and often results in me spending a minute or more just trying to highlight the center square. Is there a better way of doing this? I can't imagine this is the main way in which one scales, otherwise it's the most poorly designed scaling system I've ever seen in software. The translating is also bad, but it is a little bit easier to highlight the arrows.

Select the object and in the parameters tab use the scale dial to scale the item, if the scale dial isn't showing then click on the hamburger and tick preferences>show hidden properties.

You can also use the "scale" sliders in the parameters tab.

I didn't know that you could make the scale dial appear when it didn't.....Thanks.
