Adding Hair produces unsightly scars on forehead

Adding Hair produces unsightly scars on forehead. Please refer to attached photo.

- Is this happening because the "wig" is not perfectly fitted to the character?
- This is happening even though I am fitting a G8 hair to a G8 character.
- I have rectified it by shaping the wig and adjusting "Forehead-depth" by -1%... would this be the proper procedure for such errors?

Is the figure moved from the default load position?

Not moved but had a small pose added to twist his head. The hair was added after the pose though.

Those artifacts are caused by the hair cap intersecting with the forehead. It can happen when the character is morphed or posed as automatic adjustment is not always perfect, especially for surfaces this close.

Using morphs, scaling or a push modifier to make sure they don't intersect anymore fixes it.

Thank you Leana! Those were my suspicions too so my newbie remedy was to adjust the "forehead depth" and it worked, but I just wanted to learn if that was indeed the "correct" remedy, thanks so much for confirming! There are a thousand things that I am learning ona daily basis very much thanks to the support in this forum and I am looking forward to contributing myself one day soon I hope!

So I just got more scars... but this time it is not from a hair cap. This is dear Michael4 with his original default skin; after I added some expressions to his face, I noticed the unsightly scars over his eyebrows and little bits on his forehead. How does one go about correcting these? For now, I did post-work on Adobe but there must be something within >Surfaces that can remove these scars prior to rendering?

Use the Spot Render tool to render your character's head twice, one with hair, and one without hair.  Layer the two images in Photoshop, bald image on bottom, and you can use that to erase away hair artifacts.  Then merge the two images, and save it.

Hi @Dave230 - this render has no hair item loaded at all... it is the default M4 skin which comes with hair. Although your idea is a very fine one for the next time I have this scar issue with hair products!! Thank you :)

M4 has an "eyebrow" bodypart, maybe that's what is intersecting with the head?

  • if you're not using large amounts of instances you can also set the iray optimisation option "Instancing Optimization" to speed instead of auto, this sometimes fixes the issue without other adjustments

  • The quickest fix I use for hair problems is to increase the head size by 5% in the hair shaping tab.  Almost all hair products have this as an option, and it seems to work the vast majority of the time for me.

@skinklizzard I fully do not comprehend what Instant Optimization has to do with this but IT WORKED!!! All the scars just disappeared as soon as I selected "speed"!!! THANK YOU!

Hi Leana, I tried to play around with the eyebrow but it had no options within parameters/posing etc - thanks so much for the suggestions, much appreciated as I learn daily!

  • I get a similiar problem when I use a different hair color for a different hair. Like Georgia hair but a Jolina hair color. I get these black lines on the forehead. I just put the picture in the phoot libray on the computer then go to "Edit" and remove the marks.  It's not too much of an issue and I've learned to  live with it.

I think doing the head resize + a few percent is the easiest. Why bother with post editiing just for that.
