Projection painting Daz figures

JQPJQP Posts: 512

I'm looking into doing this with Blender, but also with other options. I just read somewhere that Substance Painter can't paint across seams. That may or may not still be true, but that sort of thing is a deal-breaker for me. It occurred to me that for all I know, Blender can't paint across seams, either. Does anyone want to recommend a tool for projection painting? IIRC, 3d Coat seems to come up a lot in this context, but I have Blender and Maya 2020...do I really need to learn 3D Coat? I will if it offers some advantage...

I use Mudbox to do projection painting onto a mesh. It can paint over seams.

I don't suppose you use Mudbox because you don't like it, but...what's the overall experience like? How much work is it to learn and do the setup needed to paint on something relatively complex like a Daz figure?

Mostly I want to paint relatively simple stuff, like body suits.

I can't make a statement on Mudbox's ease of use when compared to other programs, because it's the only one I've ever used to paint on a mesh. It's simple to import an image to use as a projection or stencil. The only challenge I've encountered is painting on a round object, such as trying to paint a sleeve around an arm...because you have to paint in bits and then move the mesh and then paint some more, and so on and so forth. I'm not sure how intuitive other tools are for that sort of thing. I created these tattoo sets in Photoshop and painted them on in Mudbox -

(hopefully the above image is okay...it's sideboob, so no actual nudity...both facebook and tumblr have said it's okay, lol)

Andya, that's good to know. I want to learn Blender because I keep hearing good things about 2.8. So I'll have to watch the videos I saved and see if I can get Daz figures set up.

Melissa, yeah, wow, that's way more intricate than I need to get. I just want to paint simple stuff.
