Foreground Blends question

SevrinSevrin Posts: 6,310

This is not a question about coffee or whiskey blends, but rather grass.  Which is less illegal in a lot of places now!

Seriously, though, I would have a use for Foreground Blends by @esha that  would involve an uneven surface, and I'm wondering if it could be adapted.  I really like the distribution as it is, but would like use it as sort of a dForceable blanket.  As it is, it's mounted on a flat plane with no subdivisions, so that doesn't work.  For example, in this render, I used grass clumps from the (Im)perfect Lawn product, which is very nice, but a nice blanket of sod to soften Fi's sitting area and drape over the ridge would have been better.  At least I would have liked to give it a whirl.

I bought this a while back, but never got around to using it (I think I keep forgetting about it because of the terrible, completely undescriptive name), but I just dusted it off and learned that you don't actually HAVE to use the included planes. I made some quick steps and a plane, and dForced the latter over the former, then applied one of the Foreground Blends grass patches. It looks awful, obviously, but it's a pretty extreme example, hastily produced, so it could quite easily work for what you're attempting.

Cool.  Thanks for doing this.  I didn't realize that the base prop was optional.

So, I got the grass to play ball, but couldn't apply any settings to it.  I just got errors, no matter what I had selected.  Applying settings to the base props worked fine.  However, the daisies were another story, and didn't follow the grass's example.

I like the conforming, but I think I would have still needed to use some of the imperfect lawn and dandelion props to add variety.

This is obviously not the intended use of this product, but it was a worthwhile experiment.

Interesting, I didn’t go that far with my experiment. Are the materials hierarchical? I’m not surprised the flowers didn’t conform like the grass

  • I'm just chiming in here to add that I have had almost no luck modifying the provided lawn to look full. Between the last post and now, has anyone had luck making the lawn look, well, more lawn like. Instead of five to six inches between each blade of grass...

In the Surfaces pane, you should see a parameter called something like PR hairs density. Increase that, and the grass will be thicker.
