Custom Characters for art referance (DAZ or Poser)

Hello I am new to DAZ and wanted a little advice.
I am using DAZ figures essentially like my own models for art reference
I would like to know what is the best way to customize body and face and hair of figures.
I have seen a few ad ons that add extra customization for Victoria 6 or genesis 2.
I was considering getting Poser instead if the face and hair room are worth it.
So basically I want to know if it be better to stick with DAZ and download the ad ons to morph the figures I already have, or if I should get Poser 10 which I believe already has those capabilities.
Poser Pro is out of the question due to the price.
Any advice would be really helpful, thank you.

Poser only uses its own figures in faceroom
singular inversions facegen does the same thing using the free of facegen version plus a genesis exporter for about $100
Daz studio also has a plugin or standalone program called faceshop by Abalone, in Daz store
LAMH (look at my hair) and Garibaldi hair while not yet dynamic, are fiber based and stylable hair plugins
Thank you for your reply :3
You say Poser's face room only works with Poser figures, meaning I can not use Victoria 6 for example? Are there any figures comparable to V6 in Poser?
I have seen Facegen, I thought it was more of a face copier, like make your model look like a celebrity ect. How do I get Genesis, my version of DAZ only seems to have Genesis 2.
Same thing with Faceshop, does it work like facegen, or can i use it to make my own faces?
So I was looking at getting Garibaldi and Faceshop for DAZ when I heard Poser has a face and hair room built in. So basically I want to know which is better? The ad ons for DAZ or the Face/hair rooms Poser comes with?
I would end up spending a little more on DAZ ad ons, but I don't mind if its superior in customization.
Poser Faceroom is based on Facegen technology and like it, uses photos to create morphs
Miki, Simon, Ryan etc the figures which use it, Poser included and additional figures.
Most later ones do not work in Daz studio.
IMO ugly buggers too!
Hair is Poser only
Poser a good addition to your tool box but more for in program rendering with DSON using Daz content, there is dynamic cloth too.
P9+ needed for DSON
you are best buying evolution face and body morphs for genesis for a start.
Genesis should load in studio
you must have missed an installer or not set DIM up right
Are threads on this.
I see.
So you mean this is more like what im looking for?
http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-evolution-morph-bundle
I just checked my installer, I think Genesis is in there lol
I have seen people selling Face morphs on renderosity such as this one
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?ViewProduct=92687
How do they make those? Is that with like Zbrush or Hexigon?
Also a LOT of the morphs i want are for Victoria 4. I am hoping to see more for V6 cause thats the one i bought doh!
Also are the free stuff from Poser any good? the webpage says they have a ton of poses, people and objects, i could potentially save a lot of money if they are any good.
V6 is Genesis2female so genesis morphs do not work
there are morph sets for her too even HD ones
yes are created in zbrush mostly
you can export a base obj of Genesis or G2M & F with zero subdivision to any modeling software and create morphs so long as you do not change vertex order, just move resize bits of mesh and keep it in default position and scale.
Many use Blender.
Ooooh ok I get it.
So essentially there is not a way to adjust face in Poser like the Evolution allows in DAZ?
Enless you make your own morphs in Zbrush/blender ect? Which of course is pretty advanced for me atm lol
I am just worried about buy a lot of content for DAZ and then ending up using Poser for what i need lol
The Genesis etc. figures will load with their morphs through the DSON Importer for Poser.
I am a Poser user, but I have to say that honestly, if you don't already own Poser, then DS is the way to go. You can download it and the Genesis Starter essentials, plus Genesis 2 Starter Essentials all for zero price and try it out to see what you can do with it before you even buy any add ons.
I know that if I was starting now I would go down that route. The Poser face room and the hair room are not really all they are hyped up to be.
Why do you say that? I already feel like I need to spend a pretty penny to get the things i need for what I am doing.
But like I said before if those things (Mainly Morphing face and body) can not even be done on poser then its pretty obvious I need to stick with DAZ.

and yes in Poser there is the morph brush which is a bit easier than Dform in Daz studio
Poser figures have morph packages too but the fact most Poser users buy Daz figures says oodles
by all means buy Poser but since you are probably gonna end up wanting the Daz figures anyway studio is free
You can morph Face and body in Poser, but for versatility you will still end up buying a lot of additional things. I use Poser, but I also only use DAZ 3D figures within it.
There is far more available for the DAZ 3D figures, whether it is the Generation 4 figures or Genesis. The Gen 4 figures can be used in Poser versions back to Poser 6 as they are stand alone and don't need DSON. But you still need to buy Morph packages to make them versatile, they can also be used in DS.
What I am sayiing is try DS with what comes free with it, get a feel for the program and then think about what you will need to add to it.
if you are quick Zevo in flash sale http://www.daz3d.com/shape-shift-for-genesis
For versatility of what exactly?
Are you referring to the face morphing itself or just to have other figures?
I am not going to use these as my art, they are for references. So technically I could use the base figure for all my pictures, i just would like the ability to have custom character models for my different characters body types. Short and Busty, tall and slender ect
The face Morphs still something i really want to do at some point, and the main reason im worried about which program to invest in.
Eventually I would really love to make my own morphs in Zbrush or blender ect. But that's a whole other art form and much in my future.
For sheer versatility of the figure, straight out the box so to speak, you cannot beat Genesis and Genesis 2 Genesis in particular can become anything you want it to even creatures. It is infinitely morphable figure wise, short, tall, thin, wide, young, old. heavy, petite you name it, it can do it.
I freely admit that the only reason I stick with my Poser to Bryce workflow is because I have used it for 15 years now and am so stuck in my ways I can't be bothered to change.
Ok well I have been playing around with the free version of facegen and Genisis just to see what i can do. I'd really love to make my own morphs, but one step at a time! I guess I will just hold off on buying Poser. Really it was all the free stuff and the face room that I was tempted with!
From browsing around the forums it seems Faceshop is not very good. I wander how Poser's face room compares to Facegen. Because with the current sale on amazon it be cheaper to get poser then to buy facegen. But then again i could only use it with poser models so errrr! why cant everything be compatible =(?
With the Free Genesis Figure and Just 5 add on's you can have just about any Face you need.

and this set..

You can Build, hand Dial just about any Female or Male Figure you can think of with just those five morph sets for Genesis.
I use them to create unique characters for my work.

For what you want to do, I'd recommend the Genesis figure* and the Evolutions Head and Body Morphs. Add the DieTrying morphs as Wendy mentioned because they're free and give you additional options. You may find that those alone are sufficient for your purposes, but in case you feel you still need more options, then I'd second Jaderail's recommendation about the Morph Resource Kits.
*The Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male figures are more advanced in some ways, but less economical as you need to need to buy the male and female morph sets separately.
Wow thank you for the wealth of knowledge everyone!!
Now lets see what we have here. All those kits look very cool for genesis!
Is there any comparable for Genesis 2?
I realy don't mind spending a little extra, I just did not want to invest in Poser or DAZ content then end up not using one of them. Trying to avoid wasting money lol For example I bought V6 and M6 when DAZ offered me a discount for my first order. Now I feel that was a waste of money cause all the morphs that have been suggested are for Genesis BOO!
Basicly what i plan on doing is working on getting Female morphs first anyway. But if Genesis is more customizable then Genesis 2 I'd like to go with the better one.
I was using facegen demo with Genesis yesterday, There are a lot of options to morph the face... but at the same time some basic edits are missing. Like my main OC has a round nose and facegen seems to be incapable of producing a round nose tip, its always pointed ERR! For a secound I thought it would be all i need, but its actually pretty limited.
Then I read the tutorial on making head morphs in hexagon or Zbrush, maybe its not as hard as I was thinking? Or at least for tweaking anyway. I just do not want to get carried away since my main art medium is digital painting not 3D modeling.
Aaannnnd I am rambling again lol
Bottom line is which model is best to invest customization into, Genesis or Genesis 2.
EDIT: I almost forgot kind of a side note, is Platinum Club worth it?
I'd say Platinum Club is definitely worth it. Even if all you buy is one $1.99 item or one weekly freebie or one DAZ Original every month or two it pays off.
Here's a link to a chart listing many of the more popular morph sets available for various figures:
The Morph Matrix
The only thing different to my view from G2F G2M to Genesis is that the G2Figures are much newer and just do not have as many morph sets made for them at this time. Some day they too will have just as many sets as genesis, I'm collecting the G2 sets as they come into the store myself.
The Genesis Starter Bundle (which contains the Evolution head and body morphs and a bunch of other good stuff) is in FastGrab right now (70% off).
Thats awesome deal on that bundle... but i kind of want to work with Genesis 2 =(
After playing around with Sculptris I found its not very hard to make morphs. But I ran into a Problem. I cant figure out how to actually use them in DAZ.
I was following this tutorial and successfully exported Gen2's head into Sculptris and morphed it. But this guide is outdated and i'm stumped on how to actually use the morph
http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/artzone/pub/tutorials/dazstudio/studio-relapp01
It says to use Morph Loader, but when I go to the order page for morph loader it says "Morph Loader is not supported in DAZ Studio 4. For Use in DAZ Studio 4, see Morph Loader Advanced and Morph Loader Pro." And I cannot find the Advanced or Pro in the DAZ shop o.O
I am having a hard time finding anything that isn't outdated information. =(
What version of DS are you running? If the new version, in your My Serial Numbers you have the code to turn DS4 to DS4 Pro which does have all the tools built in now. And DS4.6 is the newest Version of DS FYI.
Yes I have the newest version, it is there! Thank you!
All the presets are for zbrush, hexigon, blender ect. Nothing for Sculptris, so i am not really sure what to put the settings on.
I just now tried to load the morph and it said it didn't change anything. Ahhh so confusing!
It also wont let me change the "Load morph for" options.
When i try the Pro uploader it says the geometry is wrong and wont work either.
Ahhh I am thinking of using Blender just because there is no tutorials for Sculptris ._.
I don't know too much about this process, but here's a link to a more up-to-date tutorial that may be useful.
I only use HEX to build morphs with. The one stumbling block many miss at start is that your mesh exported must be at the Base resolution, genesis figures use Subdivision by default that must be OFF for the export. Then your Morph can not ADD mesh too nor remove mesh from that mesh. Your morph can only move the mesh for it to import and function properly. I just export Default and Import at Default that keeps your settings consistent from export to load.
Thanks guys... sadly no matter what i do I get the same error "Warning: Geometry did not match, failed to create morph."
