How do I get custom scripts and bookmarks back?

3Diva3Diva Posts: 11,751

This has happened several times now over the past couple of months. I'll be working in Daz Studio and DS will freeze up and stays frozen. I will let it sit for an hour and still it stays frozen. I try and force a shutdown via task manager and it still won't shut down, then my entire computer freezes up and nothing responds, not even task manager, and I have to do a force reboot. When I'm finally able to get my computer to boot back up I open up Daz Studio and it's reverted back to a workspace layout that I haven't used in months AND all my custom scripts and bookmarks are all gone.

1) How do I get my scripts and bookmarks back? I KEEP HAVING TO RESET THEM UP and it takes ages.

2) Any idea why Daz Studio keeps freezing up and then locks my computer up completely? Is that something anyone else has experienced? Does anyone know what causes it or a fix for it?

I'm going a little bit batty from the frustration here. I'm usually a very positive person but this keeps happening and it's really wearing me down.

Daz only really locks up for me on a bad dForce sim. I generally don't have that issue when I'm just playing, but I keep my memory use low as possible.

I got fed up enough to download the beta channel version, and I usually use the beta instead of the main Daz these days. My normal install isn't working 100% right (even after reinstall because I think there's some properties that don't wipe on uninstall, and that's still messing with my setup) and I don't want to bother fixing it.

I've never seen it reset my scripts?
It kills my workspace sometimes, and I have to re-open the Aux view on my second monitor, but the Scripts don't go away for me. You'd think that it preserves that state.

Anyway, if you don't have both the regular and the beta versions, you might want to swap over to the beta channel and see if that works better for you.

I think the last state of the program is only saved when you exit normally. If it crashes, it isn't saved and any changes to the UI are lost (menus, toolbars, etc.). Studio goes back to the previous known state the next time you start. Saving the layout is also a good way to restore it at any time (Window -> Workspace -> Save Layout). So, make the changes you want, save the layout, and exit the program.

I've had this issue a lot lately. It seems that my bookmarks stop working and then when I try to add it it tells me that it already exists but it doesn't work. I remove them, and yet they lose their icons and stop working.

I appreciate the feedback, but I know all that. That's not what's happening though, since I can use the same layout and the same saved scripts and bookmarks every day for a couple of weeks (shutting it down every day, sometimes a couple times a day). When this happens it still reverts back to a very old layout that I used many months ago, and removes every one of my scripts and bookmarks (even though I have been using them nearly every day for a couple of weeks). So it's not like I've made a bunch of changes and never shut the program down and then it crashes and reverts back to the state it was the last time it was shut down normally. Nope, it's reverting back to a state from many months ago (at least to a layout I used many months ago) - and removes ALL the scripts and bookmarks. And I do have my layout saved. Reloading it just brings back the layout but not any of the bookmarks or saved scripts.

I'm sorry if any of that sounds snarky, I'm trying to explain without sounding snarky, but I'm probably failing. I know you're only trying to help. :)

I'm using the General Release build. I really don't want to have to move to using one of the Betas for several different reasons. I hope this can be sorted out, this is making me nuts.

Have you found a fix for it, or have you been able to get the bookmarks back after that?

What version of Daz Studio are you using? (If you mentioned it, I missed it.)
Are you trying to run more than one instance of Daz Studio at a time?

Just one instance of Daz Studio. General Release 4.12.0.86 (I can't update to the latest build, but that build is not that old so it shouldn't be the issue).

No worries, don't know what you've been trying.  All those settings are saved in the folder "%APPDATA%\Daz 3D\Studio4" (you can copy/paste that to the Explorer address bar). Check if the files there are being updated when you save your layout or when you exit. Or maybe they are being restored automatically from File History (if you use that; it's what "Previous Versions" uses). The old layout data has to be coming from somewhere, unless that's some default that Studio puts in place.

The files for your layout, custom actions, etc. are stored in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4. Are those files getting deleted or corrupted? Once you get them back to what you want, maybe make a copy of them so you can try restoring them later. Does Daz Studio freeze up when you are doing a particular action? I've had it freeze up sometimes, but Task Manager always can kill it, and it doesn't freeze my whole computer. I am not using that version, though. I use 4.12.2.6 Public Beta.

I hear that you don't want to update. If you change your mind, I recommend that you DON'T update to 4.12.1.117. It has very annoying and disruptive UI bugs that were fixed in 4.12.2.6 Public Beta. You can try the beta without disturbing any of the settings of your release version, if you want to try it just to see if it has the same problem or not.

Great advice! Thank you, guys! I'll try copying my AppData once I get all my bookmarks and scripts set up again and hopefully if/when this happens again maybe I will be able to restore the custom scripts and bookmarks.

I'm not exactly sure what causes the freezing, but I THINK (I'm not 100% sure) that it could be caused by accidentally clicking on two different actions too quickly.

I think clicking too fast on the next thing before the last thing finished is what locks it up for me, too. I guess I'm lucky that Task Manager has worked for me.

I zip that folder up every-so-often (esp. after doing layout/bookmark/script tweaks) and rename the backup zipfile to a date-name.zip scheme.

I've had this happen a bunch lately too. No pattern that I can associate either. Same version 4.12.0.86.

If DS goes south on me, I'll even let it sit in its stasis, and I'll go copy/zip that AppData folder out from under the broken DS instance before killing DS with the task manager.

    cheers,

That sounds like a good idea. :)

    Hi,

That your whole computer locks up and even task manager doesn't respond after several minutes is usually a sign your computer may need to go see the Doctor. Or that is my experience.
Am running 4.12.0.86 for a long time now with long day sessions and I have never had that.
In the past, it did go slow before when a render dropped to CPU, but task manager just took up to 2-3 minutes before it fully responded.  Am up to 64GB ram (from 16gb and then 32 gb), and my system works especially well now.

A suspect you may want to check out is your computer memory management, especially the ram.
In the past replaced some RAM on one system and the temperamental behavior stopped.
Memtest did not help in that situation to idenitfy it as a problem.  But I went ahead and replaced anyway, and problem was fixed.

Anywho, that's one suggestion to consider.  Good luck!

It only started happening recently where the icons for scripts would stop working. I am not sure why. I can remove them all, and still try to add them, only to be told it exists.

I wish that the scripts, and customized icons thing could be managed in that window, rather than under several layers. I use the custom script menu lot to add specific shaders such as iray, or use certain tools like look at me. It is so many clicks to root them out from where they are nested in my runtime.

Once you do have them set up, make sure to save the layout (Window > Workspace > Save Layout).  Then be sure to "Update and Merge Menus".

interesting - does the 'save layout' function also save the PA product settings like bookmarks and visual-menus stuff? I could check, but perhaps you already know.

I save layouts, but assumed that was only the DAZ resources - and the things I'm losing are, well, everything.

The last time I "updated and merged menus", all the scripts I had set under in the Scripts menu item as custom actions disappeared.

For me it saves any custom actions or menus.  I save layout before I update and merge menus so I can reload them if they disappear.

Ya, that was my experience at least once - I definitely do my backup zip trick (above) before using that update/merge function nowadays.

As mentioned, I'm not sure what causes this in my case. I don't run multiple DS instances, which would be *very* likely to cause this kind of muck (this would be before the multiple instance script/fix was coded into 4.12.x).

Lots of CYA tricks when using this SW.

Ok, so before I try this let me make sure I have the steps down correctly - First Save Layout (which I do fairly frequently), next tell it to "Update and Merge Menus", Then reload the saved layout and that should bring the custom actions back?
