Confused about 3DL to Iray conversions

So I don't deal with 3DL content much, having started since Iray's debut.  On a few occasions I've fooled around with older characters and clothing.  I've gotten okay results from just applying the Iray Uber Base to 3DL garments.  I wasn't expecting it to work well, but it doesn't seem like I needed to substitute textures.  The diffuse texture went where it was supposed to, and so did the bump map.  I can't recall if I had trans maps, but I'm sure I would have remembered if they went wrong.

For clothing, is there a lot else I need to worry about?

I find that simply adding the Iray Uber shader can be sufficient for some props and non-organics. Often times though the light colors (whites in particular) are usually quite a bit too bright for Iray and often benefit from adding a slight gray or slight blue tint to the Base Color. I think bump strength usually needs to be adjusted, and sometimes displacement. For organics like skin and hair there is often a need for quite a bit more adjustments. I usually like to add translucency and SSS. And adding Duel Lobe settings usually helps to add some depth to surfaces' gloss or shine.

Pretty much what Divamakeup said. If you do a lot of clothing there are some additional products that can help some things too, I've converted a shirt before that didn't look quite right with just the Uber shader, remembered I had some parrot dolphin cloth shaders which I applied the cotton (keeping the picture maps) and it fixed what I felt was off.

Either bump or displacement or both (forget which) values needed to be adjusted a lot I've found.  Transparency also required some manual work, but I can't remember the details offhand.  It may depend on which converter you are using, I don't know if they all do the same things or not.  And of course you can't convert a bunch of stuff at all if they aren't just basic image-based shaders, and some things are so different upon conversion that they won't work as intended (although might still be useful as random shaders unrelated to their original purpose, for example some metal shaders no longer work as metal but make decent stone shaders, although your content thumnail icons will be useless for identifying what they now do.)
