Importing .max files into daz studio

Hi all,

I recently got my hands on a bunch of low-poly people figures that were made for 3DS Max to populate renders of architecture and stuff like that. But they would also do just fine to populate city renders from Daz Studio. I do have access to 3DS Max (2021). Is there any tutorial available on how to use 3DS Max (or Blender) to convert . Max files to Fbx or 3DS so I can import them into Daz Studio? All my efforts so far have yielded nothing: the FBX I come up with does not appear to have any geometry that shows up in daz Studio... Thanks a lot! Kind regards, Me

Also try OBJ format. One thing to check is sometimes the opacity is turned down when imported.
  • Haven't tried exporting to OBJ yet... But the opacity isn't it. I checked that. As a matter of fact, there is literally nothing in the surfaces tab... Not a single surface to select properties for...

you mean Autodesk character generator is still available?

I used to grab them for iClone devil

  • Don't know about character generator. What I have is a couple of 3D people scans.

ah maybe the 3D people including Manuel doing his dance

I got the dance at least as a bvh retargetted using Reallusion software into DAZ studio

    he works in Carrara

What I do is use the 3ds .OBJ export, with the Bryce preset. I usually don't use the export materials option as I find that can be a bit wonky. I then import the exported object frpom MAx into Bryce and re-export as OBJ, and import into daz using the Bryce preset, that works well for me.. Most of my car renders used that method of getting the model into DAZ..

  • Thanks!!! I'll try exporting to OBJ then.

What usually goes wrong there is that the .mtl file is created in such a way that D|S doesn't quite understand it. Check the files in a text editor. The first noncomment line in the .obj ought to be the folder/filename of the .mtl file (which must not have spaces), and the texture folder/filenames in the .mtl file can be either absolute or relative to the .obj file location. D|S is very fussy about this; I'm now in the habit of checking every .obj before I import it, even if I've just converted it in PoseRay. After a quick round of whack-a-mole, most of my conversions import cleanly with the basic textures.

Just export them as OBJ using the Daz Studio preset and you will be fine.

  • That solution works indeed!!! Thanks for pointing me to OBJ and DAZ presets!!!

  • Actually, using the DAZ preset in 3ds Max 2016 doesn't work. It seems to lose surface selection options, and remapping becomes impossible. I'm still trying different methods to get an import that's remappable.
