I was quite surprised to see that he was 88. Seems to me to be recent when he was palying middle-aged characters on UK TV shows and movies. I liked him, good actor.
[EDIT] But then again, I consider any band after 1980 a "new" act.
Was Chariots of Fire a bigger movie than I realized? I know him much more from Alien, whereas the only thing I really know about Chariots of Fire is the theme song.
edit: also, I think it's a little funny that LotR is one of the things he's best known for, when he played a pretty minor role in those movies.

Chariots of Fire won a Best Picture Oscar so it was considered a much more prestigious film than Alien though Alien is probably better loved.

My main memory of him was from 5th Element.
In my opinion Chariots of FIre was way, way, way over-hyped and whilst porbaly a good film did nto live up to the hype.
I feel really out of the loop as I've not saw Chariots or Fire, Alien, or the LOTR movies but one. I did read the LOTR books cover to cover when I was laid up with two severe ankle sprains as a 15 year old during a 3 week snow in.I got them for Christmas but I imagined some of the characters to be completely different from how they played them in the movies. I like the ents fighting a back the best still yet of all those book pages.
So saddening - he was incredible in pretty much everything he did - and his 'Vito Cornelus" in 'The Fifth Element' was epic (not that his others were shabby by any measure).
Worst part of getting old... it's not the aches and pains and loss of health - it's the *people* I miss the most.
Oh wow, I didn't realize he was both the android Ash in Aliens, but also Father Cornelius in The Fifth Element. What an amazing talent he was. Rest In Peace, Ian Holm.

Indeed.
The signature tune is iconic. I thought the film was poor; even the great acting didn't do it for me.

Jesus of Nazareth (1977 I think) was the first movie I ever saw him in. Great actor and could play good and bad with ease and believability. RIP
Laurie
RIP Sir Ian
Will remember him most for Alien, The Fifth Element and LOTR - very versatile actor

Seconded.
He was Frodo in the BBC Radio adaptation of LotR back in the 80s, and he was fantastic. Check it out if you ever get the chance.
