Piercing Collection for Genesis 8 Female(s) - applying shader

I've added piercing s from the collection to my figure. They come in by default as silver. I want to apply a different shade, but it isn't taking it. I right click the piercing, for example 'Beaded hoop ear5left'. I see it selected in the scene and then double-click the shade I want from my library. Nothing changes. I'm previewing in Nvidia in the Viewport.
Any idea about what I'm doing wrong?

For Shaders, you need to select the intended surface in the Surfaces tab, as well. For Materials, you only need select the item in the Scene tab.
The difference is that a shader can be applied to any surface on any object; this is why you must select both the object and surface. A material includes the name of the surface (or many surfaces) it's to be applied to; if you try to apply it to an object that has a surface with a different name, nothing happens.
