How to Custom Rig a Character (Having problems using the joint editor - cannot do tutorial)

So I wanted to rig a custom character I have. I found this tutorial here:

I watched it, seemed straight forward enough - until I tried to actually do what they say in the tutorial.

Using the joint editor tool I can create bones and move them into position with the green controls but not the red ones. In the tutorial it shows you just click and move the bones into position but when I try to do that with the red control, I can move the point wherever I'd like but the bone itself just moves up and down only and grows or shrinks.

Additionally, I cannot get the 'snap to end point' to work either, also shown in the tutorial. It snaps to the vertical position but not the horizontal.

I feel like I'm missing something really obvious but I can't figure it out. I couldn't find anything online about what I'm doing wrong and the video of course has no sound.

Attached are images from the video I was trying to replicate, and images of what actually happened attempting it in Daz 3D.

If someone could help me figure out what I did wrong or could point me to another tutorial that works better, I'd much appreciate it. I've looked around for custom rigging in Daz 3D but couldn't find much.A few I did find were a lot more confusing or didn't seem to work as well. Pretty new to the joint editor tool as well so if there is something well documented for that I can learn from I'd find it helpful too. :D

Thanks! :)
