Struggling with lighting.

Hi again everyone. I wasn't going to post because my first render ever turned out to be really embarassing but after hours on google trying to figure this out, I caved and decided to ask here.

The first image is my first render ever and beside the demon eyes (i don't know why but i'll figure it out) , I really cant seem to get a nice fill of lighting in a room.

I found the second image on google from a VN. That's the kind of lighting i see in VNs and I really want to figure out how I can achieve that.

My render was taken in an environment i bought off the Daz store. I have a big white panel just behind my camera which is  facing my character and another panel attached to a glass window to her side.

I almost bought a ghost lighting pack on the daz store that looked like it would give me the results i want but after spending an entire day trying to figure out even clean lighting like the VN image, I think I can wait another day and see if any of you professionals can help in any way.

Sorry for the long post. I just really want to light my rooms and characters up VN style so I can bring my story to life.

Are the white panels set to emit light? What is the environment Mode set to in the Render Settings pane?

Yes both of them are emitting light.

The environment mode is set to Dome and scene. I thought that would let some more light come in.

I feel like the second image (VN) is obviously not realistic lighting and is probably just a common VN style but that's what i'm trying to achieve.

I apologize if this is the wrong section

It may well be that the environment is overwhelmng the panels, the light is certanly strongly favouring what I assume is the window side. You might want to adjust the lights' luminosity, or remove the dome and adjust Tone Mapping. I suspect that the VN has some overhead light involved too.

I forgot to mention i also have a third panel spread across the ceiling. I'll set the mode to scene only and give it a go. Thank you for the quick replies!

Update : setting the mode to 'Scene only' made things much better. But I still can't seem to accomplish that not too realistic VN game style. Is it because there's hardly any shadows in that image?

Lack of shadows is certainly a factor, yes.

You may want to consider 3Delight to render with if you're looking for a less realistic more game like VN look, it comes with a very different set of flexibilities (including being able to tell 3DL not to cast certain shadows etc) you can take some artistic licence with. To start with, maybe throw together a simple scene, save it out with two different names, then prep one for iRay and the other for 3Delight, experiment with these until you find the look you're after.

Thank you you KA1! I'll post an update just in case someone with my taste shows up in the future to help him/her out

No problem, you seemed to be doing the same as I did when I started, setting up the complex scenes etc you wanted for your VN/idea before experimenting with how things work. I mainly use iRay now but 3Delight is still very good for different visions. Throw in Linerender 9000 and you can create some crazy good anime/cell shaded images too!!

I tweaked some stuff and got here. Is there a way I can get rid of the pixelation on her face?

render longer (if necessary turn up the quallity setting or increase the convergence threshold) or add a light shining in to filll the area shadowed by her hair.

Are you limiting to a certain number of iterations? How long did that render take?

I got this denoiser i found here on the forums and it worked wonders on the image. Thank you both for the responses!

Rather the render settings were set properly than using a denoiser.
