HD Skin - how does it load? And what does it do?

I purchased Dain 8 HD and I now find Dain 8 and Dain 8 HD in my Content Library.

Does the Dain 8 HD character auto-load with its HD skin texture or would I have to locate the HD material and apply it to the character (I can't find any HD skin for Dain 8 HD through smart content).

For a learning experience, I loaded Dain 8 (non HD) next to Dain 8 HD and noticed that both characters have very similar skin textures, if not identical - so what's so "HD" about HD?
I must be missing a point here since I find many fellow Daz'ers so excited about purchasing the HD versions of their favorite characters. For me, the primary objective of purchasing HD is for super high quality human skin when doing close up face portraits; here though, I don't see any extra value-add from my HD purchase.

In the attached picture (zero touch up), can you tell apart Dain from his HD twin?

  • What subdivision level is Dain (with HD) set to?  I'm also curious about how to use the HD characters and haven't purchased any yet.

Thanks for asking the questions, DMax!  I'm following along to see what the answers are.

I wanted to keep it au naturel so kept both characters at default SubD Level 1 and Render SubD Level 2. But truly, I do not see the benefit from the extra HD purchase... hopefully somebody comes along to shed light on this so we can both learn!

HD refers to the detail in the morph (it moves the vertices created by SubD, usually using level 3 or 4) - it isn't about, and doesn't include, maps.

Ahhhh this explains it all. Much appreciated!

@leemon_c43b45a114 - I redid a quick render using SubD 3:5 and one starts to see a little more detail on Dain 8 HD... I see a shallow smile line forming across the cheek on Dain HD. Hope this helped you out too.

  • Thank you DMax and Richard!  The questions, answers, and renders were quite helpful.  I really appreciate it!

Dain looks great, he's one of my (many) favorite figures.

    Thanks again!
