I remember many years ago when Poser couldn't handle all our content. Some people used utilities to change the extension of the character files so they'd go into a different Poser library. And then Hogwarden created a Utility that allowed us to switch between different banks of content. That led to a huge problem where Poser locked up. That was because many references were wrong. So we got Correct Reference Pro... All that happened around 1999.

Don't get me started on Poser and it's content management - DS is from another (way better) planet, even with the PA:s that cannot see the "bigger picture".

...it still was bad particularly MAT files being in the Pose folder instead of Materials one and having all sorts of different naming conventions just within that category.  Opening the Pose folder, what usually first appeared were all the basic Gen3 morphs and textures (all preceded with a "!").  Next there were the basic Gen4 morphs and materials after which you had another list of material files further down the tree with different naming formats.

    MAT <name>

    MAT- <name>

    MAT_<name>

    Mat_<name>

    MAT<name>

    MATS <name>

    Mats<name>

as well as some further subdvided by PP (Poser Pro) and P4 (Poser 4) materials.

This, along with the myriad of different conventions for other content and having files scattered throughout the content tab tree, sometimes seeming almost "willy nilly" is what led me to build a custom runtime strcuture that was more logical and easier to work with.

I've installed most of my Genesis content from scratch. I'm still hunting down a few items. I'm exhausted... I just ran out of hard drive space on my 3TB hard drive. I added an old 2TB hard drive to my system, now it's time to juggle a few files.

All this wouldn't be necessary if DAZ had done some organizing from the start.

My problem is still with non Daz content which is why my runtime is a mess. DIM puts all Daz items in their proper places but some 3rd party items will either work or be lost even with a lot of careful concentration. Is there a way to make Poser items install through DIM?

    You could use this: https://www.daz3d.com/content-package-assist

That way they can be installed via DIM, but you will not see the items using Smart Content, you will need to look in the Content Library.

Content Wizard can both make DIM install packages AND install Smart Content.

Not Poser items, which is what the RSand55 asked for. I am fairly sure that Content Wizard needs duf files in order to create Smart Content.

What do you mean by lost?  Not installed correctly, or that you just can't find the presets in the library mess?

My rule of thumb: if it has Smart, AI (and similar) in its name, leave it the hell alone because it wont be close; nor will it allow for smart useage.

Amen to that, and I usually add the words automatic and central to that list.  What makes it doubly ironic is that the one thing that DAZ has come out with that works exceptionaly well is called DIM.  cheeky

I've encountered one huge problem with the search function in DIM. You can't search for all Genesis products. It will only find items with the word "Genesis" in the name. I've worked around it by searching for "5, 6, 7, 8," This will catch Victoria 5, Michael 6, etc. Unfortunately you also get anything with that number in the name.

there's a default filter however.. can't say if it works for you.. It's "Filter by Name ---> Daz 3D Figures" - all main generations are there..

Oh my goodness, I didn't know of this function! Clicking the little spyglass icon opens up a ton of search parameters! Very cool - thank you!

Inserting the usual rant about the complete lack of decent documentation for DAZ products here - rant, rant!  snort!  ##@^%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Okay, I'm done.  devil

Sigh.  Those are STILL an issue with products bought at some of the other stores.  And you left out the extra special fun part where the vendor will put materials for SOME product, under a group folder with their vendor name, sometimes just under the products name, and sometimes under a completely different and apparently unrelated group name... like how TruForm at Renderosity's files can be found under under TruStyles, inlite or TruForm, or how some vendors used to put the DAZ version of textures inside a separate folder in the poser library instead of the DAZ one...

    it used to trouble me

now I just don't look as far too big and use Everything, DIM and my online content library search to find stuff

the naming conventions make it difficult though

    it is indeed a mess

    +1

    Haha.

Good point; I've said it does what it says on the tin, and does it well. I'm not sure how someone can have issues with DIM and expect to manage Studio - but that is apparently the reason for Daz Central.

It is not only the lack of documentation, but the available is nested in the help page in a way avoiding find the information

Thanks Havos. I'll have to give that a try.

Taoz: Yup. Not installed correctly, or that you I can't find the presets in the library mess.

Sometimes 3rd party items install in incorrect categories. If I seach hard in Content Library I usually

can find them but not as easily as DIM installed products.

you can just use https://www.daz3d.com/turbo-content and add your own content tags in the database for every item to be smart content to your liking with custom categories without physically changing file locations, and will also filter all your item's depending on what is selected in the enviroment
