Poses, Renders, Materials oh my!

I'm trying to set up a shot with the Red Planet Mars prop and am confused by the various items. There is the prop itself, but also a variety of rotations and materials, but he most confusing is the issue of Render. What is a Render? Is is applied to a prop like a material would be?

There are several stages in making a picture.

    1. Bring in the figures
    2. Bring in props
    3. Pose figures
    4. Set up the landscape/background
    5. Cameras
    6. lights & so on.
    7. Now, we are ready to create the final picture or 'Render' in the size you want.

To create a 'Render', press 'CTRL-R' on a PC (or possibly 'Cmd-R' on a MAC - never used one so I'm not sure). and two new windows will open, a small one is a dialogue window with a progress bar and the other is where the render will appear. Initially the render window will have a checkerboard grey background then there'll be a wait and a very speckly version of your picture will appear. It will de-speckle (speed of computer dependant) and become more detailed until the progress bar gets to 100% and your 'Render' is ready to be saved. It should resemble the scene you have set up..!

To change the render settings (and there are a lot) there is a 'Render' tab (in the unmodified DAZ Studio (DS) installation, it's on the left side of the screen). There you can do all sorts of things, starting off with the fundamental decision like determining what the 'Render Engine' will be. This is the most fundamental decision that will affect your final image. There are several opions 'OpenGL' (Basic & not very good, very fast) '3DLight' (quite old, quite fast, quite popular, with a pedigree going back to the start of DS) and the much more modern iRay. iRay tries to simulate real world physics & as such it's the most demanding on the computer but gives photorealistic results if the settings are right. It can take a lot of time to do this. Because it's the most sophisticated renderer, there are a vast amount of options, all of which I suggest you play with (but not at the same time!). Some affect the render quality, some the image size, some the way the 'camera' responds (film speed, the way it reacts to colours etc) and then the 'environment' option is probably the most useful. In this you can choose an HDR image to act as a combined background and lighting dome, or you can light the scene using a realistic sun brightness, date/time & position.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Regards,

    Richard.

My question wasn't about how to render...I'm pretty good at that...but what a "render" item is. So with the Red Planet product, there are a lot of different items in the smart content panel. There are various props. And then you can ad a material. But there are also "render" items and I don't know what those are. I'm assuming it might be a preset that adds a camera and lighting to a scene...but it has never worked when I applied a "render" to a scene.

Those will be render presets, changing some or al of the render settings (they are, for example, commonly used to load a new HDR).
