any way to export a single part of a model without making everything else invisible.

I was working on something last night that required me to bring just the fingernails of a figure into Blender to make some modifications to the mesh and bring back into DS and parent the modified model on top of the fingernails, the problem was the scene the figure was in was very busy and to hide everything just to export one surface as an obj would have been a lot of clicking back and forth.
Does anyone know a way I can separate a surface from a model and export it into a modeling program without going through those steps? Note that hexagon is not a stable option for me and it never has been, I'd like to be able to get it straight into Blender if possible.

I would like to know this as well. Like when I want to make a head Morph i thought I could make everything invisible then just make the head visible. But it doesn't work like that. Have to individually make each thing inadvisable, but what you want is such a pain!
Select the things you want to keep, then use ctrl-shift-i or from the Scene pane option menu click Select>Invert Selection and use the Parameter pane's Visible button to hide everything. You will still get the fingertips as it is bone visibility, not surface opacity, that determines what is exported.
thanks, I'll try when I get home!
I wanted to update on my finding with this procedure:
On smaller scenes I could invert the visible portions of the selected items however portions that were already invisible were also inverted to visible.
On large scenes I was crashing
so while this methodology is a possibility for use in some scenes it would be much better as a dedicated function if it could be included in future builds of DS so I'll put in a request to add as a feature.

and while I'm here the y,z axis in the blender export should probably be set back to normal, not flipped by default so I'll request that too unless anyone reading knows a good reason to keep it.
