Decent tutorial for strand based hair?

Strand based hair has been aound for a while now and everything I do with it results in a person who looks like they've been stranded on a desert island without a comb and have recently contracted radiation sickness.  Thin hair going off wildly in all directions with lots of bald spots.  When it first came out I figured that eventually good tutorials would come along and would help me to get decent hair styles other than buzz cuts.  And yet I can't find any.  There are some tremendous styles out now that use dforce and I have a few but it would be cool if I could just roll my own for simple styles that don't need to drape.  Anyone know of any such tutorals or other resources that can help out?

Thanks, some useful tips there.  I was hoping there would be something that would walk through setting up a long hair style but I guess it doesn't exist in that way.  Bummer.
