Parenting a prop to a figure without havinf the prop move?

Hi all,

I'm havinf the following situation: I posed a G8 figure (falling down after being shot). Then I've moved some liquid splash props into the scene to try and create the impacts of the bullets. So I moved all the individual props into position on the G8 figure and its clothes. Now I decided the figure should be bent backwards more to make the pose more realistic. In order to avoid heving to reposition all five impact props, I wanted to parent them to the G8 figure. But when parenting the first one, it moved to a completely new position, got rotated and rescaled (Ithink because it recalculates rotation, position and scale based off of the G8 figure now...) Is there a way to parent a prop to a figure after it has been carefully positioned in the scene, without it moving and rotating around like this?

Thanks a lot,

Me

  • How are you parenting the Prop to the figure? There is more than one way.

You should right click on the Prop... then "Change (Prop) Parent", make sure "Parent in place" is checked, then select the Node on the figure where you want the Prop to be linked to.

  • Aha! "Parent in place"... Never noticed that before... Does that also deal with the rescaling issue?

  • No. The Scale for the Parent will always affect the Child objects. (Same for figures, same for parenting an object to another object. The child objects inherit the parent's scale.)

I usually just do some Math to work around it. So if a figure is using a 90% Scale, then I set the Scale of a child object to 1.00 divided by 0.90 (111.11111%) to overcome the Scale difference.

  • I see! Thanks for the golden tip!!!
