How and Where Content is Stored?

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about how and where Daz Studio stores its content. Let me first describe something I did recently:

I loaded a Poser prop (a pistol), from an old Poser runtime, into a scene and positioned it within the right hand of a Genesis 2 figure. I posed the figure's fingers to match the pistol. Then I selected the Genesis 2 figure and saved a wearable preset in which I selected the pistol and included the target pose. Now whenever I load and select a Genesis 2 figure, I can double click the wearable preset and it automatically loads the pistol into the figure's hand and applies the pistol grip pose as well.

Now I'm wondering about what this wearable preset actually stores and whether or not it depends on the location or the existence of the original Poser prop. I've looked inside the preset's .duf file and it has one or 2 references to the original prop but it doesn't seem to matter if the original prop is deleted, renamed or moved - the preset still seems to load correctly.

When I create a preset like this, does Daz Studio store a complete, separate copy of the prop in its own library? Where is it stored? I was wondering if I should first save the prop as a support asset, before creating a wearable preset of that asset. Or is that essentially storing the same prop twice?

Yes,,as you supposed,,, if you save pp2 (prop) as wearable.duf,,
actually the preset do not record path to the pp2 files.

but record the path for source file obj (runtime/geometry)
If I hide (move) the obj file, and try to load the wearable,, (I think,, it may not work. though I do not try it,,)

Then DS save geoemtery data as dsf too. and stored in data>auto-adapted directory with strange name..
    without telling user clear.

(so to speak,, when we save obj as new figure and prop", from top menu ,, we need to decide the location
wehre the dsf will be saved in data directory)

If you check your wearable duf, serch "scene" section. then
check "scene"> "nodes". "geometries". "url" value.

it should be pointed to the "data/autoadapted/..."

then I think we may not hope to store same data, for poser type prop and DSON preset.
So that I prefer to use,, dson type prop , and hope vendors offer dson type prop ,if they can.
(but many good products which I want to get,,
have not offered as" duf and dsf" type prop,,I am really pity,,about it :shut:

If you save the pp2 as new prop (DSON), then load the prop and parented with actor,
and save wealable preset,, the duf do not make the path to autoaapted/....dsf etc.
and not save data,, in auto-adapted.

simply record path to the dsf where you decide when you save as prop. (DSON)

it seems clean and reliable. we can find where we stored the geometry data, and
which dsf each preset refer. not sotre strange long name dsf files.

OK. So just to confirm - you're saying it makes sense to save the prop first as a support asset. And then I can save a wearable preset which will only point to the support asset. Is that correct?

I believe so. and I did often,, then sometimes remove pp2 etc.
(but original are the vendor, pp2 and geometries in runtime,
I make just copy and change them as duf, and dsf . I never sell or say it is my originall etc of course :)

Then ,, I hope you actually test with some pp2,, by your self,,
with many case,, save as prop (DUF and dsf in data as your name)
and hide them (change location somewhere about pp2, and runtime gometry)
I never confrim , I just say what I have tested,,and believe so.
if it causer problem,, I can not follow ^^.

    ===================
and caution, if someone see this topic then they miss understanding,,
now we can delete auto-adapted files etc,,
You can see reall night mare.. DS often try to make these auto-adapted files for many reason in data directory.
I do not like the way,, but if you do not touch tme,, your scene and preset can work. (usually)

If you explore dson etc,,, without daz confirm (as official documents) I think I can not do any confirm.
and actually I often cause problem by my self testing ^^; then cry for somepne help me,,
