Question about Husky for Daz Dog 8

in The Commons
I'm thinking about buying the Husky for Daz Dog 8, but I had a question about the fur. Is the fur only the colors that come with the husky, or will it pick up the color of the texture used? I was wondering if it would work with my other dogs (Lab, etc.) and pick up their colors.

@Faeofthe3rdDimension, I just tested it. The Husky has two fur objects, one dark and one light. You can plug the Labs materials into the image channels of the Root Transmission Color, Tip Transmission Color, Hair Root Color and Hair Tip Color. However, I didn't like how it turned out.
All three of the Dog 8 breeds that were released together, the German Shepherd, Husky and Wolf, have two dforce hair objects. I'm not sure any of them would work for what I think you want to do. (Load the Husky, for example, dial out the Husky shape, dial in another Dog 8 shape, apply the appropriate materials for the new shape, modify the dForce Hair surfaces with the appropriate breed materials, and have a furry Dog 8 for the breed of your choice.)
That is exactly what I wanted to do. Thank you so much for testing that out for me, I think I'll hold off on the husky for a bit, then. Maybe they'll eventually come out with a "universal" hair for them.
Do you have either of Oso's dForce dogs? Those might be a bit more flexible.
I don't, not yet. I've been hoping they'd go on a really good sale. I usually only have a few bucks at a time to work with, so since I had my PC coupon for July, I can only buy a Daz original right now. I'll get them eventualy though, and I did wonder if they might do what I am wanting.
I just tried it myself, and I discovered a problem: Wolf/Husky/Shepherd, Labrador, Great Dane, Dachshund and French Bulldog all have their own UVs, so the maps don't line up. If it's possible to add those UVs to Oso's dFurs, then it could be done, but I'm guessing Oso would have to do that himself. Won't stop me from trying, though.
Map Transfer? Like the human figures, the UV's are all available for any instance of Dog 8, so it should work the same way.
Oh, right, there's that.
Here's Lechuza with Map Transferred Yellow Lab materials on the fur. It doesn't look quite right, but there are probably some other settings you could tweak to get it there.
I dialed Lechuza out, and Labrador back in, which made it clear that Lechuza may not be a good choice because the beak doesn't have fur on it. You could try editing the hair growth maps. Pooka is a better fit, because it does have full fur like a dog, although it's definitely exaggerated in some areas, especially around the nose. Here is a slightly modified Pooka fur on Labrador.
You don't have to do anything fancy to copy UV to a fur; a 'target surface UV' fur will pick up whatever UV the skin is set to.
However, the maps for hair length and hair placement are based on default dog UV. Map transfer should let you create your own set for whatever dog UV you are using.
The variation of dog UVs is annoying, but it's a good way to handle the fact that dog layouts are vastly different (tiny ears vs. giant ears being the most obvious)
Thank you so much for trying out the different furs!
I didn't realize they all had different UVs. That complicates things, though I do understand that there is probably no other way to do it.
I'm not sure what Map Transfer is. Is it a product, or is it a script?
It’s a function of DS. Go to the Surfaces pane and click the hamburger. You’ll need to create a template (just one for dogs, because coat and ears are all you’ll probably need and they use the same map), drag the desired map(s) into the template, select the template and adjust any settings you want. In my experience, you’ll have to set your renderer to 3Delight if it isn’t already, or else the Map Transferred textures will come out all black.
Oh wow, I had no idea that existed! Thanks for all the info! ^_^
@Faeofthe3rdDimension, I did a Map Transfer tutorial a few years back, linked in my signature. Maybe that can help you get started.
I'll check it out, thanks!
there are so many techniques that can be used in DS. WOW ... are they all listed someplace? Its like each product brings out something else. A tweak, kitbash, now map transfers, UV stuff, etc.
At least I can stay dazed and confused forever with DS.
