CPU and GPU renders are different

I've tried to render the Infinity Cove backdrop from Render Studio 1 & 2 in Iray, with both CPU and GPU. It renders fine and smooth with CPU, but with GPU (GTX1070, DS 4.12.1.118, Studio driver 451.48) it gets distorted. Anyone who knows why? (I have the feeling this has been addressed before, but a google search hasn't revealed anything).

Weird, I never tried rendering it in CPU mode, but a few updates back I noticed that the infinity cove was rendering wonky and simply stopped using it.
Yes, it started with one of the DS updates long ago where I reported it, then apparently it disappeared again with a later update where they apparently had fixed it. And now, after some more experiments it actually looks like they have fixed it.
The reason I was having the problem again yesterday seems to be a Render Settings preset I once made of the DS default render settings. I sometimes use it to get back to default when something else has changed the settings. Apparently that preset was made in one of the DS versions that broke Infinity Cove, since the problem returns whenever I apply it, so I've now made an updated version of the preset from the latest DS version and that doesn't cause the problem. If I shift between the two presets I can actually see the problem appear and disappear again.
Why the problem isn't there when using the old preset and rendering with CPU I don't know though, but in any case that's not a problem so I'll just leave it at that. I'm just happy that Infinity Cove is working again.
I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Maybe comparing the content of the presets will reveal what is causing it.
Maybe it is something to do with the change in noise handling. Now we have the built in denoiser and before there were a bunch of individual noise parameters that are now hidden and (I think) deprecated.
I don't know. I appears unfortunately that there are still certain light presets that are causing problems for whatever reason, like this one (Light 18L from Pro studio HDR2) but it seems to work OK with most other light from the Pro Studio sets.
Actually it looks like there is a fix for at least some of the light presets that are causing the problem - just raise Infinity Cove on the Y axis until the problem goes away (I had to go up to 6% in some cases). By default it's lower parts are actually a bit below the scene floor when you load it.
