Need advice or tutorial on using d-formers on a figure.

I am trying to create a scene with one character grasping another characters's arm. I would like to add some indentations (slight) where the grasper's fingers contact the arm. I am told that I could probably do this using d-formers, but I've never used them before and most of the tutorials I see have to do with dealing with poke through. I thought I would check the forum and see if anyone has any advice or can point me to a tutorial (written or video) that could help me out.

Thanks in advance.

This would be a very common thing I'd imagine. You might be able to get there without the need for D-formers if you set the gripper to be the collision object for the grippee. If that does not work out (it may not provide quite what you need, depending on how close teh two figures are in the pose - apart from the hand) then yes, it'd be d-formers. You might be able to get away with just one, but the principle would remain the same.
You'll need to add the d-former to the 'root' object of the figure to be gripped. Select and move/scale/rotate the Field object so that the area to be gripped is the only one with 'dots' on - it'd be best if they were the redder sort. Once there use the D-former (under the _Base object) to move/rotate the effect.

I don't think the mesh has enough resolution in the arms to do what you want. If it did this would be somewhere you could use a weight map-controlled DForm or possibly a Push Modifier.

For example, select the figure you want to have the indents - Edit>Figure>Geometry>Add push Modifier, give it a name like Indents or fingermarks. In Parameters, under Mesh Offset, set the value to -1 or ore (just to have a clearly visible effect). The whole figure will now shrink weirdly. Got to Create>New Push Modifier Weight Node... and name it something like Indents Control. Tools>Node Weight Map Brush to switch to the weight-painting tool. With the new Indents Control node selected, in the Tool Settings pane you should see an entry in unused maps for your modifier - with it selected, click Add Map.

Now, to fix the shrinkage of the whole figure, right-click in the view port and from the menu select Geometry Selection>Select All, then right-click again and select Weight Editing>Fill Selected and enter a value of 0%, then click Accept. Now you can paint with the brush on the vertices you want to dent in (they should first go blue, then as you scrub they should gradually shift to red and the indent should kick in). Once you have the right degree of relative denting use the Mesh Offset value in the figure's Parameters to adjust the absolute amount of denting.

Yet another new thing ...! :) Which, I suspect, has been around for a while and I have just not heard about until now ;)

Thanks for the info! I can't wait to try them all out. If anyone else can think of something different to try, please let me know!
