How to Add Smoothing Modifier to Footwear Without Collision Issues?

Hey guys, I've got a question regarding the smoothing modifier and footwear (specifically footwear like high heels where the character figure's foot doesn't conform to the shape of the footwear).

The problem is that when I apply the smoothing modifier and raise up the Collision Iterations I end up with the boots deforming to where the character foot is (obviously not what I want as it looks crazy).

My question is, is it possible to turn off smoothing on hidden objects (in this case, the character figure's foot)? Or is there another way around this? It seems like kind of a glaring issue since footwear like this is pretty standard it seems.

I've worked around this problem before by simply not adding a smoothing modifier and then hiding the character's legs and feet so they don't poke through. For the boots I'm using in the scene I'm working on now though I don't have that option because the leg is visible through the laces.

I've attached a couple of pictures to show what I mean. One has smoothing off, the other has it on (the one with the crazy feet jutting out). Let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks.

EDIT: I solved this specific instance of the problem by making a morph for the feet to fit into the shoe. Was kind of a pain, so if there is another solution to this it would help in the future. Thanks~
