Should I install both DS & PS files if old Product?

I am both a Poser user (since Poser 5) and a DS user (1 1/2 years.)

I have many silly questions, but feel if I don't ask, I will not know.

I have a feeling that, years ago, perhaps Daz Studio didn't render Poser props well, so vendors included .ds files.

With the current version of DS, I rarely have a problem with any Poser props.

That said, unless a product is IRAY, should I both to install both the DS and PS files?

I have a very cute little product called "My Little Garden" from RDNA created in 2009.  It has both .ds files for Daz Studio and .pp2 files.

I found a discussion https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/158361/dim-and-ds-ps-cf-files, however it is from 2017.  Daz Studio has made great strides since then.

I don't use the Daz installer.

I have a very fast way of installing.  I use one runtime for DS and PS props.  I know it takes up a lot of disk space, but I like the original files kept in the Runtime file.

Anyway, I copy the Data file, the Geometry file, any Python or Morph files, and the Texture file into the proper places in my runtime.  Then, I put my product file anywhere in the DS props I want or in the Poser Character file I want.  I realize I am not getting any use of the Meta data, however I like installing my own stuff.

I guess my question is did Daz Studio get better at reading and rendering Poser products over the years?  A very stupid question, I know!!

It depends, if you are happy with the imported Poser materials then I suppose you can skip the DS native files (which may only be material presets anyway). I don't think there are any products at Daz that require the DS native version ratther than the Poser (for the Dawn and Dusk figures from Hivewire you do want the two application-specific versions)

Thank you so much!!  I love to change materials!!  Daz Studio Iray shaders are just awesome and I collect them!  I am just amazed at DS Water Shaders and Mirror shaders!!

Daz Studio only reads basic settings like diffuse, transparency and bump (and even bump will usually need to be adjusted) from Poser materials, it will totally ignore any complex settings like displacement or specularity maps. That has not changed, and is not likely to change.

When a DS file is provided it includes 3DL materials, which should give you a better starting point for DS renders even when using Iray, especially for complex materials.

Now if you're happy with what you get out of Poser materials out of the box or plan to tinker with materials anyway you may not need them, but they can be useful.

Ok!!!  That makes sense!  I wish everything had IRAY materials!!  I do use shader products and free shaders!!  They are a blast!!!
