    Cool.

Ok Surfaces yes that makes it a little harder as we have the DS (Daz Studio) default surfaces explained here http://homepage.eircom.net/~neilvpose/ds-settings.htm and the new Subsurface Scattering Shader that now comes with the newer figure skin texture sets. Then on top of that we also have a shader called Uber Surface which a number of new but older skin sets have. My advice is to go through that tutorial I linked to first and get an understanding of the default surface then you can move on to the more Advanced SSS shaders.

Also give yourself time to learn all this.

Let's start with your two specific issues.

(although I'm really good at throwing rocks too, so here's a few to start with:
The most basic parameter would be the Diffuse Color. For the moment, just think of that as the object's color. normally it will be either a solid color with no image texture, or an image texture along with the color white (which won't affect the image texture). If you use both an image texture AND a color, it will add a tint to that texture; you probably don't want to do that normally, although it could be handy sometimes
Ambient Color: this will make things unnaturally brighter. Handy for special effects, or for cheating, but it'll screw up your shadows, so you usually don't want it.
Opacity Strength: Used to make pieces of your object transparent.)

Well Szark, I took a look at your gallery, and all I can say is, wo [brow up].

I'm going to go over that tutorial you linked to above, and then I'll comment.

    More later.

I'm starting out with the blurb Szark suggested. Since I know zip now, I can't help but learn from it.

As a coworker used to say, I am "expanding my sphere of ignorance."

I strongly suggest you Download and read the DAZ Studio Quick Start guide and Users guide PDF's. One of the two, my issue is I forget which, covers the Surfaces Tab and all its functions very well in language beginners should get with no trouble. Here is a link...

This is a little bit embarrassing, Jaderail. While looking at Niel V's tutorial, I happened to open the DS manual. What do you think I found? Chapter 3, p37, titled [drumroll] Textures, Surfaces and Materials. Yeah, I felt stupid. Maybe I will be able to compose a more intelligent question now. Damn.

    Thanks.

Yeah I forget about the new manual with not having one for so long. ;)

Thanks for the Gallery comment. If you pop over to my Render Thread you will find some interesting tutorials listed on page one, post one.

I've come up empty handed a dozen times, keyword searching the DS Manual. It figures that when I don't look in there at all, the exact thing I need has its own chapter.
    .........

Yes, I had a look at your render thread. Maybe I'll comment there.
