How to make a Strap/Sling for a prop?

I have Sea Shanty Props and I want to add it to a character in a scene I am working on.

To muddy up the quest, I want to put a "guitar strap" or sling on the Gittern and have it being carried on the character's back.

What is the best way to "make" a sling/strap for this in Daz?

dForce can do some of that, but you'd probably want 2 separate simulations (for each side of the strap). It might be technically difficult this way if you're not familiar with messing around with dForce.

Another idea is a poseable rope or string. If you make the rope wider and flatter (reduce the Z-axis Scale, or whatever is giving depth to the rope), it can look like a strap. Mechasar has a String product, which may be useful. https://www.daz3d.com/strings
Take 2 rope/string segments (you don't need to pose the section that is behind the figure/off camera), morph and pose the rope/strings as appropraite.

  • Thanks Blurst...
I tried a lot of different things (including trying to use an asset with a "posible" guitar strap, but they just weren't working out for me.  Trying to figure out how to "bend" an asset has been a challenge.  While some have posing morhps, I just can't master the skill yet.
I had SY dForce Ropes, Vines and Tubes, so I used a length of ropes for that as well....

I had the same issue where trying to bend the rope around the character was like trying to spell my name in wet spagetti using one chopstick... I had to manipulate each kink of the rope, as I couldn't figure out how to select a bucnh of them and bend them all at once...

I am sure I did it the hardest way possible.  Uggghh.

Is there a tool that you could set/anchor the ends of a strap, rope, chain etc, and then use your mouse as a sort of magnet to pull the item in the direction you wanted?  There has to be an easier way....

Regardless, after 4 hours, I am done with it for now...  At least my bard doesn't have to carry his lute in hand everywhere now.

  • Looks like good work!

So, what I would do (trying to explain more)...

    • Take one Rope/tube prop with poseable segments.
    • Anchor one end (the origin point of the prop) to the attachment point on the instrument.
    • Bend/pose it so it looks sufficiently curve-y.
    • Use the Rotation dials (under Parameters tab, Translation) to swing the Prop around so the end gets close to where you want the end to disappear (behind your figure)
    • Pose the remaining Prop segments so that it does go off-camera.
    • (Repeat the process with a second Rope/tube prop (representing the other end of the strap).)

(Yes, this gets really messy if you try to pose every single segment of a prop, but if the prop is set up with the Origin point at one end, you should be able to swing it around easily with the Translation dials.)

  • It took me a long time to figure out that one end was the origin point, and as luck would have it, I had the wrong end when I started and couldn't figure out why DAZ hated me so much.  The posing dial that came with it, just curve/bend Front Half, back Half.... and I am really using one medium rope instead of two small ones... which may have been easier.

I kind of feel I need a better solution though, as I will need this set up for many different poses in different enviroments with the Bard doing different things... so its not just a one and done scene.

Methinks the best way forward would be learning Blender or Zbrush and make my own... alas, I know nothing about those programs, and hardly anything about Daz.
