Why does the hair I purchased look nothing like what loads into the software?

This is the hair I purchased. https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files/prod/46877/

I can change the style and color of the hair, but it either looks clunky or I can see the scalp and not the pretty realistic texture that is used to sel the hair product.

  • That's https://www.daz3d.com/xelene-hair-for-genesis-3-8-female-s - the Product Library page is available only to those who have purchased the set.

You need to render (or use the nVidia Iray preview mode) to see the finished result, hair in general does not look good in texture Shaded preview mode

  • Ahh okay, still trying to figure that one out! Thanks :)

it's not just the hair.  Everything will look bad in the viewport until you render it.

What's happening is that the Viewport uses a separate rendering engine from the ones DAZ|Studio uses to render. This has the advantage that it displays a working view of most scenes very quickly even if your computer isn't all that powerful, but it is a bit basic. Among other eccentricities, it gets confused when trying to display two or more surfaces one behind another that have opacity maps applied, such as hair made of several overlapping layers. The 3Delight and Iray render engines don't have these drawbacks, so they can render hair properly.
