Can AppData > Roaming > DAZ 3D Be Moved?

Can the AppData > Roaming > DAZ 3D folder be safely moved to a different drive? I have a TEENY C drive and the AppData Roaming DAZ 3D file is taking up about 6 GB of that tiny drive. I'm in the Red on that drive and REALLY need to clear up some space. Is there a way to move that data without causing issues in Daz Studio?

(Edit - Update: I've borked up my Smart Content and I can't figure out how to get it back. I highly recommend people do not move any folders from their "Roaming > DAZ 3D" folder.)

The DS settings are small. The two things that would take up GBs are the DIM Downloads folder and the CMS database.

You can set the downloads folder in DIM in Basic Settings.  You can set it to delete the packages after install also.  I would change the downloads folder to a drive that has space, and/or archive them after installation.  You can move the files from the current downloads to the new one (or archive them once they're installed).

You can also change the CMS location.  Shut down any applications that use the CMS (DS, DIM, DazCentral) and make sure there are no postgres processes still running (Task Manager in Windows).  Once they've all stopped, copy the CMS folder to the new location.  Then in DIM Basic Settings and in DS Content Directory Manager you can change the location of the CMS.  Shut them again and make sure no postgres processes are running, and delete the old files.

Oh this is good news! Thank you! It's "cms" and "dson" that look to be the heaviest space hogs in that "Roaming" folder. If I can move "cms" at least that should be a big help.

Thank you! I'll give this a shot (*crosses fingers it goes smoothly lol*). :)

  • You can also move the Temp folder, go to Edit>Preferences in DS.

There is also Sysinternals Junction, which can be used to move folders to other folders on different drives without breaking the original folder structure.

For example, I have used Junction to move ...\Data out of my Content\ folder and ...\Textures out of Content\Runtime\ without DS knowing and/or caring about it.

I have thought many times about doing the same with the idiotic default locations of Windows, but never found the time.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/junction

This could even be used to install absolutely everything you can ever find into a 240GB C-drive, without it ever running out of space.

Ok, I did that, and I did what @Fixmypcmike suggested and now my Smart Content isn't working. Did I do it wrong? Do you know what I can do to get my Smart Content working again?

That's what I did when my Unity 3D purchased store products were taking of 85GB on a 223GB SSD system drive and it works just fine too.

I had trouble moving my CMS database (well, actually putting it in a differenmt location on my new PC). I think I gave up and left it where it was in the end.

    oh god Unity3D

might need to look into that as I uninstalled it completely as it clogged up my C drive mercilessly ignoring any preferences

a couple of days ago I moved my 1.2TB of DAZ content off my C drive on my Win 10, a quick edit in notepad of the path on the DIM account file in roaming and install manager and D|S were none the wiser anything was different

If you use DIM and don't have 'delete after install' checked, that could also take up space. ...but the various DIM folders can also be moved.
