The eyes have it - or not in my case!

Hey all,

I'm after a bit of help with an issue I keep butting heads with. Every time I render something that has dark shadows around the eyes, or under the brim of a hat, I get this (see attached). I have a decent enough set up so I'm really not sure what's happening here. Anyone have any insight? Able to tell me what stupid thing I'm doing? :-)

  • Check the shaders for the eyes.

  • I'm assuming you're refering to the burned in transparency under the eye and not the red.

are you using environmental lighting ? I've personally only seen the opposite on high light glossy areas, but it might be similar so make sure there is a background in line of sight of the eyes. you could also check the iray memory options, sometimes weird behaviour can be changed by setting instance memory optimisation to speed.

Thanks, unfortunately it's not that. It also happens if my characters wear a hat, anything under the brim comes out like this too, it's not just the eyes even though it's particular bad on this one around the eyes. I bought the Giuro Vendetta outfit and can't use it with the hat on because the same thing happens :-(

Thanks! There is no background, it's the character only. And it's not the eyes alone unfortunately, it's anything around the head in a deeply shaded/dark area. The rest of the render is fine. It does seem to primarly happen on the eyes, but i also get it in the hair etc. It's very odd.

  • try creating a large plane behind the camera perpendicular to the camera look angle or try turn on the dome with very little to no lighting.

Also which version of daz studio are you using ? the last time I saw this happen was in 4.10 I think so if thats what you're using try install the latest public build of 4.12 alongside it to see if the issue exists there too.

it could also just be not enough light, so try up the brightness of all your lights and then use tone mapping to darken it down again to the desired level.

thank you, I'll give those things a go! I haven't updated to the latest DAZ as I've read there are some issues so I've been avoiding doing it!
