Change in how to update/reset DAZ?

I can't seem to find the reset link any more. Can someone please advise? I have been being plagued lately by unexplained lighting-related crashes, and it's more than annoying. I'd like to upgrade to see if that helps. Thanks.

Oh... I'm currently running 4.6.0.18. Is there a newer release?

Do you mean to download again? No reset needed, just download from your Product Library, or uninstall from DIM and redownload.

Just click the My Account link, then go to Product Library, use the seartch box to find DS and download - better yet, use the install Manager.

I'd like to update to the latest version if there is one after the one I'm running. How will I know I'm dl'ing the current version? I have the program running on C:, and my content on an external drive, so I have to be careful with updates, as I recall.

My crashes seem to be related to the use of linear point lights, but I'm still not sure. This issue just started recently. Also, why will DAZ do a full test render fine, but crash on the "real deal"?

The download in your Product Library or in DIM will always be the current version (currently 4.6.3.52). It doesn't matter if your content is on a different drive than the application, updating the application doesn't change your settings, which include the content location.

Ah... I was afraid that using the DLM would install DAZ on the external drive, since that's where I tel it to install new content. I'm hoping an update will somehow fix my mysterious crashing.

DIM knows to install content and software differently. Only the utility scripts that come with DS get installed to the content location.

    Ah, thank you.

Incidentally... another crash, this time without a linear point light. Exception reason:

    DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\dz3delight.dll" at 0033:00000000E6D93582, Dz3DelightDll::DSlo_DetailtoStr()+789090 byte(s)

This is a new development within the past week. I will try an update tonight or tomorrow and try to replicate the issue. These new crashes are very strange, and even more irritating.

Updated DAZ, but just had another crash at 46%... same place as last time.

Apparently not. DLM installed it to H drive, where my content is, not C. So, now I have two instances, neither of which work properly. Guidance, please?

In DIM click the Settings gear in the upper right and post a screenshot of the Installation tab. The top two lines are where 32-bit and 64-bit software gets installed.

My eyes are crossed from this... off to bed. Will have another go in the morning... thanks.

Well, I got DAZ installed/updated in the proper place, and all "appears" normal in the workspace. But of the scenes I have tested so far, most characters' textures do not show in test or actual renders. Also, in the Surfaces Tab, the diffuse texture images appear to be there in the LIE, but the shaders used are referred to (above the channel/material zone list) as "Custom" instead of UberShader or AoA, etc.... and all of my displacement maps are GONE from their channel on the corresponding character. So, everything "seems" intact, but is unusable. Please help. Two years of character development are on the line here. Thank you.

(Incidentally, my Library/Runtime is undamaged. It seems that the updated DAZ is the issue.)

Make sure you installed the Default Lights and Shaders - if you ended up with DS in a slightly different location, or lost the full install of the original, the needed files from the application may have gone. If that was the problem you will also need to reinstall any other plug-ins and shaders you have in addition to the base DS set.

Well, I do recall that I did NOT install the default lights and shaders. Also, the first install (with the helper) went to my content drive instead of C drive, so I had to reinstall DAZ in the correct place... but I still seem to have the old version as well, and it loads. How can both versions be loading if I installed the update in the same path, with separate shortcuts?

This is great... :( May take me some time, but I'll get back to you. Really confused.

I discovered the reason for the two versions/instances of DAZ: One is installed to a folder called DAZStudio4, while another is installed to DAZ Studio 4. By date, the first one is the one I wanted to update... not replace. Maybe I should try to uninstall the latter one, and reinstall on the first folder.

There is no update feature. You are always installing the New version over the older version. No matter where it installs. The New one un-installs the old one and keeps the config files.

Well, the installer keeps installing the new version in a folder called "DAZ Studio 4" versus "DAZStudiio4", where the original is, even though the installation path clearly directs it to "DAZStudio4" on C Drive. So, how do I address this, Jaderail? Manual install of the new version? I'm dead in the water here, and out two years of purchases (not gone, but unusable) from DAZ, because of an errant update.

Well, JR/crew, I managed to successfully uninstall the errant update, and ran some tests on the troublesome files/scenes on the earlier version. For some reason, the textures are rendering and the displacements are back. Maybe it took some time for the earlier version of DAZ to "get word" that the errant iteration was uninstalled. So I'm cautiously optimistic that I'm at least operational with the old version. But I'm very concerned about installing the new one again now.

You may have just hit on something. My 64-bit line was originally like that (Program Files), but I changed it to the full path, including the folder name I mentioned, because I thought I was supposed to echo the path to which DAZ was located. Maybe I should have just left it "Program Files".

And that top line does NOT affect content installation, since I have that on an external drive and want to keep it there?

Yes, the software install locations should just be Program Files, and the software install locations don't affect where content installs.

Okay, thank you. I have some pieces to finish now that things are working. But in the coming days, maybe I'll create a restore point and try it again.

Incidentally, I think I have narrowed my crashes down to one or more UberEnvironment Light presets, It's fine until I apply a preset such as Softbox. Then DAZ will crash.
