What is causing this deformity?

I exported this rifle .3DS file as a .OBJ file from VUE, tried to import it into DAZ Studio and this is what it looks like. Any clue as to what I've done wrong? Thanks.

Seeing how it was meant to look might help, but if that's a render I suspect you've got concave polygons (quads or n-gons) which the render engine fills in. Ideally a mesh should use quads, and no vertex on the quad should lie within a triangle defined by the other three vertices.

I have had this happen to me several times too.

I found it happens when you are fitting an item to something it is not meant to go around, like a weapon that's being thought of by Daz as a clothing item.

Try adding the item in, without having anything like a figure or scene item targeted. It should render in just as an object, ie. don't have a character clicked, just click a space in the back ground and then import it in.

Fit To should not be done to the rifle, and check where the item is parented to, set it for None if it is parented to something.

I am not sure if this will fix your problem but hope it helps.

This is what the model looks like in VUE before I export it as a .obj file then import it into DAZStudio. Not sure if I made the mistake during texture assigning groups in VUE or checked something wrong in DAZ while importing. It is the only item in the scene so not assigned to anything.

If you made this yourself what are its statistics, assuming your modeller will give that - in particular, how many triangles, quadrangles and n-gons does it contain? If it's a free download, where did it come from?

Not without knowing which item it was.

Try using PoseRay to export the model as OBJ.

I can tell you from experiance though that the best program for converting .3ds to OBJ is 3D Studio Max

Also, 3DS does not always convert well.

    Greetings,
Are there any errors in your log (Help | Troubleshooting) when importing the object?

Is it possible it's being exported in a compressed or unusual sub-format of OBJ?

I just took a look at the model

I used Silo to open the model. Its in several peices so if you want to have the gun in parts you can. You will need to convert the textures from DDS to PNG or JPG and can do so with Irfanview. In Silo I recommend turning the gun around and moving it to the floor. It will need to be resized for inporting in to DS. Not sure the scale

Cypherfox, maybe. I have exported obj files to DAZ and to VUE before with no problem. I have never had to translate a .3DS file into a .OBJ file which involves relying on programs such as SILO and POSERAY, of which I have never used before. I have converted .DDS textures into .JPG, but that is the extent of what I have figured out to do.
I was looking for a step by step tut on how to perform a .3DS to .OBJ file export, but at this point, I am almost willing to PAY someone $5 to do it for me!
The existence of any such tutorial eludes me and I need this .obj file yesterday.
