LIE problems

I'm getting problems using the LIE but can't work out where I'm going wrong. I created a .png (texture has transparent base) to use as an overlay and saved this as a LIE preset. I then loaded a sphere and applied a preset shader from my content library. Next I clicked on the LIE preset and it appears to load in the viewport fine. When I first rendered this the overlay texture showed up. I scaled the texture tiling in the Surfaces tab rendered again, the sphere now appeared white. I rendered again, and the texture showed up...rendered again, white again...

I then loaded a new sphere, with default tiling and just changed the diffuse colour...added the overlay preset...it rendered white.

I closed and reopened DS, loaded a sphere again, added a diffuse colour, applied the preset and it the spherer rendered black. I rendered again, and it rendered without the overlay (so just the sphere with diffuse colour was showing), yet the overlay appears on the sphere in the viewport.

I'm not sure what's happening here since the LIE preset overlay does show up as being applied in the viewport, and it did render properly initially. I'm not getting any render error messages. Is this a problem with the way I've saved the preset? When I open LIE from the surface tab it show the overlay, just on it's own, which I assume is correct. Or could it be a computer problem (I'm using XP)? I've been able to repeat the problems using different inital textures applied, and the LIE prest applied on top, even without tiling the base texture.
