Problem with Pen Hair

I recently applied the colors for pen hair (this is the G2 version of the product) and while the default colors worked fine, the red make it look like it was painted on. Not sure if I can fix this or not? I think it is the base color of the hair "bleeding though" but it looks like a bad hair coloring job. Any ideas? Again it looked fine with the default colors. Perhaps there is a setting in the red materials/color I could adjust? I have tried several to no avail. I may just have to fix it post process but I would rather fix it in the render if at all possible.

Any help is appreciated.

    Never mind, I fixed it myself by editing/creating texture maps directly.
