Decals?

Where can I find a description of how 'decals' work?
I haven't bothered earlier, but the other day I got my hands on some 'decals' freebies. But I don't know how to use them. Do I use them with LIE or what?

You have to create an Iray Decal Node from the Create menu, move it where you need it to be, and apply the decal itself to the node (through the surface pane if there's no material preset).

Iray has decal nodes, which project an image onto the model - Create>New Iray Decal Node. I don't know whow the freebies are set up.
