Max Time Parameter Settings - what are the colors for?

Messing around inside the menus, and inside the parameter settings for Progressive Rendering: Max Samples there are two entries for Color A and Color B.

Can anyone (simply) explain what they do? Tone mapping? Are they tied to other parameters like 'Type'?

No, they control the colour of the slider. They are not unique to that slider.
