HDRI sky...how to lower it so the land in the HDRI file doesn't show?

Hello,

I'm a beginner to Daz and have an HDRI file that contains a sky and grassland underneath. I'm using the sky as the backdrop for my render, but can't figure out how to the "lower" the file so the grassland doesn't show up in the render. Is there a way to do this, or do I need to go find some "sky only" HDRIS? (For some reason I'm having a hard time finding sky-only ones...they all contain landscape.)

    Have you tried switching off Ground in the render settings (Environment)?

  • Yes. The ground (that is part of the HDRI) is still there.

    The only thing turning off ground in render settings does, is stop shadows from being cast on the HDRI "ground". It does not prevent that part of the HDRI from rendering.

    You can try adjusting the HDRI X and Z orientation to rotate the horizon below your field of view. Usually a few degrees (maybe about 5) is enough to get rid of low trees or buildings. If you have anything taller, you'd do better to get a different HDRI. HDRI Haven has lots of free ones. One of my favorites is Sunflowers

    That's odd because I've used HDRI scenes for lighting ouside a room with a window and found that if I forgot to switch off the ground in render settings, I got grass showing across my room floor. Switching off ground removed the grass.

    If you have ground level set to manual, rather than auto, you may have the HDRI ground intersecting with your geometry ground. When it is set to auto, it gets positioned at the height of the lowest bit of your geometry. I may not have taken those differences into account with the ground on/off discussion. I'm not at my computer to try it right now. Do you have some examples to demonstrate what you see? Maybe you found something I don't know about. There's always something new to learn from other people.

    You are right - I hadn't noticed the auto/manual switch and it seems that manual is the default. The intersecting does happen with auto as you suggest.

    I do it a silly way

    I copy paste and flip the sky part in Gimp

    add transparency to the layer

    then erase the ground

    you can get rid of the mirrored horizon with the clone brush too as long as you stay away from the edges
