feeling DIM how can I NOThave install manager in public documents on my C drive

WendyLuvsCatzWendyLuvsCatz Posts: 38,219

OK got a solid state drive installed in my PC
they hate being rewritten in same spot
Daz updates products every day some things seem to be updated again and again weekly
so
I do not want those manifest files etc being constantly rewritten on my C drive
tried fooling it
I created a new "Public Documents" folder on my E data drive
in properties for public documents replaced the folder with it
DIM saw it but still thought stuff not installed just downloaded
and wanted to still create a new folder in public documents on my C drive

I think reading something I once tried but failed with my iClone content once I can do it using something like this

C:\>mklink /J "C:\Users\...\Daz3D" "E:\Users\...\Daz3D"

C: \>mklink /J "C:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ3D" "E:\Public Documents\DAZ3D"

saved the text from then and replaced the paths but not sure how or if I should

The mklink approach works, I just set mine up on Monday.

I will give it a go after DIM finishes recognizing what is downloaded
and it still thinks it all needs to be installed
I had nothing at all install manager folder when I got my PC with cloned drive back from shop
as it was falsely hiding too in Docs folder
    it never copied it
    so grabbed it off backup
and realized quickly it could be a problem

this was since suggested to me to copy to edit paste in command prompt
    mklink /J "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Daz3D" "E:\Public Documents\Daz3D"
obviously I need to put it there first

I meant to say, copy all your installed .dsx files out first in case the original instructions hadn't.

    OK a space
    mklink /J "C:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D" "E:\Public Documents\DAZ 3D"
it now does not create another folder in public docs but uses make linked one
still 2673 things to install but will live with that and redo

The easy fix is to just Change the Downloads folder before the first use of DIM. Mine points to my Data Drive just as my Content folder does. I moved it from my SSD Drive before I ever installed the first file with DIM.

unfortunately this did not work out for me
DIM wanted to add 12GB to my precious limited space,
no zips, they are all on external
the IM folder pointed to off the drive seemed to still be on my drive
and changing stuff cannot get DIM to see my stuff is installed
for now until I can find a solution going to work without using DIM, just manually install stuff bypassing C drive altogether
I think DAZ needs to have more options in settings or installation for having DIM off the main drive entirely if you wish as more people getting SSD and the constant product updates makes it a continual data rewriting program not suited on a SSD

There is an Account.ini file in "c:/Users/[Users Name]/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/InstallManager/UserAccounts". You can define your new path for both the manifest files and thumbnails in this.

This worked for me, as well as changing the installation path to my D drive. Thanks!

thanks I shall seek that out if I decide to try DIM again

I can find no way to change the IM path for manifests in here sadly

First question - how big is the SSD? Second question - What manufacturer?

There have been several studies lately on SSD failures; in general, for an SSD of 256 GB or larger you should be able to write about 12 GB per day for close to 5 years before seeing drive failure.

Looking at your settings I'm having trouble seeing anything besides carrara files going to the C drive - and you've explicitly indicated you want the carrara items there (a fair bit of carrara items install under the carrara program directory, apparently).. The install manifest and thumbnails only take about 100 MB on my main system and only get written to when products are installed or thumbnails are downloaded. And bryce installs to the program directory - almost forgot that.

But if you really want to change the thumbnail and install manifest locations - OverrideManifestDir= is where you put your manifest directory path, and OverrideThumbnailDir= is where you specify the thumbnail path.

As currently set, downloads by DIM should end up in "F:/DAZ downloads" and the installs should end up in "F:/My library" with the exception of plugins, carrara content, and bryce content.. Is this not happening?

I have done my best to reassure Wendy that the Manifest folder even with daily updates is not a issue on a SSD drive. This would be considered Normal Daily Use and is factored into the Lifetime of any given SSD Drive. They actually work better with standard daily use than they do with low read write ratios. The one issue that many do not keep in mind is that SSD Drives preform better with at least 25% of the total size left empty or they will slow down for reads and writes as well. And all people new to SSD drives should be told up front to not run DeFragment on a SSD drive. They work 100% differently to a mechanical drive and DeFragging can actually hurt a SSD in some cases. If you have a SSD drive normal daily use is factored in to the total lifetime and that was based on the use of the OS and all log and temp files staying on the SSD as well as user created files such as Word documents. If you are afraid of daily normal use causing a SSD Drive failure you should not have a SSD installed. This is there power. Daily use at speed.

Yeah - I just did a google on 'ssd longevity test'; the first three hits were the techreport.com write to destruction reports.
