I now have a gas station with a working pump... I am looking for a vehicle that has a place to pour petrol. Are there any?

Some of TruForms vehicles at Renderosity have removable fuel caps, including the Road Ranger SUV  and the Revent Sport car.

"Just pour it over the top, it will suck in somewhere".  Paraphrased quotation from an LP record from the '60s by a now disgraced commedian.

  • That was something I had to point out to 3DClassics over at Renderosity on his 2CV. There is no filler point. Didn't do me any good though. Still runs forever on one tank.

    Regards,

    Richard.

Of course you realize that it doesn't even need the tank.surprise

Depending on the car and the level of detail required kit-bashing might be one answer, for older style cars that tend to have a protruding cap a few chrome shaded primitives might do the job, or maybe bits from DzFire’s Greebles sets that are handy for adding details. With most modern cars the fuel fillers are behind flush fitting panels so a primitive or Greeble flap and a hole in the body work made with a transparency map or the geometry editor could work, the inner detail of the recess could be primitives and/or greebles if needed.

  • I didn't pick up the greebles sets I'm afraid. But I am still on the prowl for an anatomically correct car. smiley

You need to buy a PRO pack for the anatomical elements.

  • Lol. If only there was a car pro pack. That would be different. Car 8?

That would be Herbie 8 and Chitty 8.. though there are a LOT more accessories and add-ons for Chitty for some reason.

  • why get a Chitty car though when you can have a V8?
also just angle your shot so you cannot see where the nozzle is going in.

There's a sale at TurboSquid, and for $174.83 you can get a very nice vehicle (2020 Generic Ampere RS 3D) with an electric port which can do double duty as a petrol port. This vendor makes excellent cars that import perfectly via FBX (I use Poser's since DS' fbx doesn't work properly), and it also comes in Low, Mid, and Hi res versions. The Low resolution is suitable for all but the most extreme closeups.

  • That is pretty durn awesome. Sadly, outside of my price range, but it rocks.

Carefull there, if you don't see where the nozzle is going, you may be sticking it to the wrong hole.

Here's a rather lame suggestion, which I'm sure was probably thought of and rejected, but I figured why not say it anyway...

I'm assuming you need an image of someone fueling up the vehicle... So unless it's super important to show the nozzle going into the actual fuel tube opening/petrol hole you could, depending on the vehicle, model a simple fuel door prop and place it in an open position on the vehicle body, with the camera positioned in such a way so the door blocks the view of the lack of actual details, and hiding the fact the character has stuck the nozzle through the car's body.

Of course you have to have some basic modeling skills, even though it's most likely just a simple square or rectangle you are modeling and this is useless if you need a close up detail of the nozzle going in or coming out for dramatic purposes for a comic illustration or animation... and it's also only useful for vehicles with body mounted fuel doors, not fuel caps or fancy ones where whole panels lift or details swing to the side to reveal the filler neck.

Megh... it was just a thought.

EDITED TO NOTE: I didn't notice that Kinich and Wendy basically beat me to it with more or less the same suggestion.

Remember when the filler port was behind the rear licence plate? You had to flip the plate down to get at the cap, definitely a two-hand job. Always skinned my knuckles on a sharp edge.

You actually don't need to model anything.  The part inside the car's Fuel Door where the gas goes in is shallow enough that you could fake it convincingly from most angles just by making a shape like a beveled square with a hole in the middle to the car body using an Iray decal, LIE or by modifying a duplicate of that part of the car body texture in photohop (in which case you can also modify the bump map to give the Fuel Intake area apparent dimension,), then faking an open Fuel Door Cover with small plane or other greeble bit colored to match the auto body color.
